 Topic: Gooseneck trailers

What are you all running for gooseneck trailers? What do you like and dislike about them? We have several Load-Trails. They pull really good but the rust is coming through fast. We have a couple Big Tex trailers. Fit and finish was a little rough but they seen good. We have a Felling as well. It doesn't feel as good pulling but the paint quality and construction quality are very good. Thank you

I have a Pro-Line 14k. I like it, does what I need. I think they are on the "Lighter" side of construction. Paint is thin. But again, it tows and loads what I want.

is it REAL paint or powder coat ?
REAL paint will last and easily touched up as required whereas powdercoat is 'plastic' wannabe coating, MISERABLE o or impossible to 'touchup'

I have a “Landchester” all aluminum trailer. I’ve now had it for more than 10 years and I would never have another steel trailer. It has rubber torsion oil lube axles and rides so well that if you forget and leave something laying on it, it will still be there when you get home. My trailer also has slide in ramps and after loading 2 model 40 all crops on a trailer with fold over ramps, I would never have anything but slide in ramps.

Spud, Ahhh, I think you might be the resident expert on the subject by the shear number of units and the variety. My little old car hauler is a one tractor hauler. Works better than nothing and is not a name brand. Was custom built by a smaller trailer guy in Conneaut Lake PA. Paint. I brushed on a good thick coat of oil based black a couple years ago. and its about ready for another. What do I like: It hauls real well with the F250. Well for me its easy to get on and off too, only about 24 inches to the deck. What I don't like: Its light duty car hauler, so I can only haul about 6,000 lb ish. Also the width between the wheel wells is about 82 inches and can be restrictive on some hauling projects. Also the lenght is good for a car or a D series tractor, But a full size truck is almost too big. I would need to upgrade my hitch in the truck if I went to a bigger deck over. Regards, Chris

Hello Jay: I hear you on the powdercoat. I used to be under the impression that it was the good stuff. I now know it seems to crack on sharp corners then hold water underneath to accelerate the corrosion process. I am leaning to the Felling for my next trailer due to a proper 2 part epoxy paint.

Hello Sugarmaker: The one thing I liked about the Load Trail is that the beavertail ramps could lay flat or stand on end if needed for a longer load like a pickup truck. We have had to load a few dead trucks on there and you can't drop the ramps back flat when you do. I also like that we ordered it at the time with the two full width ramps so there's no messing with a center part.

Forgot. I like the Warn winch on the front of the deck. Takes up some room but have used it to load some dead stuff easily! Just need a jib crane to load stuff from the side. Like maybe 1000 lb system. Regards, Chris

I have an old Trail Master, was originally built in Rosebud MO but now out of business. Good heavy built but single wheel axles and a 14K rating with the only tires to fit sitting just over 12K.
If had to do all over again would have opted for a PJ or GATOR Tandem Dually but they have drawbacks too, flip up or over ramps, heavy and some days their quality does lack a LOT. Duals would have done me better for load capacity but would have doomed me to a heavier than my SD 250 truck as well. Should have had a Full ton to ton and half with a dual wheel tandem axle trailer at least 28 foot long deck.

D Miller: I hear you on the dually trailer being heavier. I am thinking to go with the single wheel super single 10K axles for that reason. Still single wheels but a 20K rating instead of 14K.

The trouble with most trailers is they are built well, then get a thin coat of hardware store paint.. No primer, just a coat or two of standard alkyd enamel........ same stuff you paint on the kids swing set or old gas tanks..

My gooseneck is a Tarnell. 32 footer. Tandem duals.very well built. I had to replace all of the cheap tires that it came with. The new ones were 300 bucks a piece, but they weighed at least twice as much as the cheap ones, and I have not had a flat with em yet. I've owned the trailer for about 10 years, but have hauled a lot of loads with it. For lighter loads, I pull it with a pickup. For heavy loads, I put a king pin hitch in it and pull it with my semi. I did put about 3 grand into it at a trailer shop about five years ago. New suspension, some new wiring, brakes, and such. But it had earned that bill. I have borrowed and pulled triple axle, singles, trailers before, and they seem to have less "jerk" to them in some bad road conditions, but for the most part, I'd stay with tandem duals. One thing that I'd like to try if I ever upgraded, would be one that has the hydraulic lift on the whole rear of the trailer from the axles back,thus a full width, hydraulic ramp. Think that would be neat. Oh, the paint on my Tarnell has seemed to hold up really well. I also put an electric winch on it. That's been very handy. Thing about getting one with the hydraulic tail, is then a person could put a hydraulic winch on also, which would trump the electric winch. Darrel

I've been dreaming about owning a Midsota trailer that local dealer sells. He specs them for farmers and tractor collectors. Little over $14,000 with electric over hydraulic beaver tail ramps with cleats for loading tractors, and electric over hydraulic jacks. Comes with 2 batteries and solar charger. Torque tube frame. I believe it comes with a winch also. Several colors to choose from including orange.

You will only find decent load capacity tires in radial for the SS set up, they will be soft sidewalled and tend to weight lean pretty easily. A good friend has a SS roofers dump trailer that I followed as he was having a issue with what he called trailer drift, was just the tires rolling side ways with a decent jag on the trailer. He tried SS Bias ply but still rolls, can be a bit unnerving in the seat in corners and a tall heavy load on. They just flex in the sidewalls a lot.

best winch setup I've seen was one INSIDE the steel 'equipment' box on the tongue. Totally hidden,battery inside as well. Kept it clean ! Simple slot to get cable /hook out.One of them 4 way roller gizmos kept cable pulling proper too.

Appalichian trailer out of Ohio 22'+ 3' dovetail fold down ramps winch mounted no battery on the trailer got a heavy cable from truck battery to the back bumper with a heavy duty plug. Plug the winch into it and winch away no extra battery to maintain. 2 single axles 14K capacity. Use a king pin all the time easier to hook up that way. Works for me.

I been think'in about gittin a trailer too, dunno if it'll be a bumper pull or a gooser, I don't wanna hafta mess with pull out ramps, nor do I want the fold up ramps, I've got 2 trailers now with the fold up ones and like said above, they get In the way of some things. I've been think'in about the ones that tilt using a hyd pump jack on the front, and the back of the trailer with the tapered edge. anyone have one of them? the good/bad about them? I also don't want one of them 60/40 split tilt trailers.

I bought a used 22' gooseneck (H+H Co. Company been sold, new trailers no info on old trailers.) Tandem axels, 8 lug. push button Hydraulic bed W/battery and battery hookup from pickup. flat deck tilt. Love it. $4500. Only wish would be LED taillights. Easy to load and chain tractors down. Pull 2 WD45s loaded. deck is between the wheels for low height.
