    Posted: 22 Aug 2010 at 10:24pm

Hi,

I just fixed my HD5 steering clutches, put 2 hrs on the machine and broke a track link. I was wondering when it was going to happen! Not the greatest spot either...on the side of a hill nest to a barb wire fence.

I have never worked on track before so I can use some tips.

I was able to get the track back on the sprocket and pulled it close together with a come along. I have an extra section of links that I found, heated it up and beat out the pins. Made a spreader to seperate the links...what a bugger!

So is there an easier way to replace the broken link? It was a bear getting the pins out of the used track in my shop let alone trying to get them out of the broken link on the machine.

The track is really worn and I've seen some cracks in links here and there but the pads are in great shape. I would like to replace them as it's just a matter of time before it breaks in another spot. Anyone know of good track links out there? Saw some NEW ones on Craigslist last year...should have bought them.

no new links i have found, just pins and bushings. make a hydraulic press to press the pins out but be careful not to heat them as they will then tend to come out after you run it a while. local track shops should be able to provide pins and bushings and bolts. also was told by a track guy to convert to a newer size track and change rollers and sprocket, he did not know what machine would convert though. good luck

Should be track out there to fit, HD5 and HD6 are same track just more or less links.
A track press is only way to do it , also the height of link is important. I posted a picture of track gauge on here today.
Believe Northern Tractor has a shop out your way , try them for parts , know they have few branches around and one here in MN as well as in WI and out west.
I found a good set of HD6 track for loader and had them shorten to 37 links for me .with new master pins and bushing.
Try Thill Track and Tractor in Eau Clare WI also they may be able to locate a set for you in your area.

Thanks for the leads for the new track, I will check them out.

In the meantime, I need to make a quick fix and get the machine off the hill and walk it back to the shop.

Again, I have a replacement link. So how do you spread the link to get in in? Heat it up? I spread the link in the spare chain I had to get it out with a spreader screw I made but it bent it. I guess I can put in in place, clamp it and heat it up.

Each link is held together by the bushing being press fit into link, problem is the end of the bushing indexes into the next link to prevent side play. The master link has a shorter bushing only as long as the space between the link, then uses a special washer to take up the needed added space.  The track bolts hold everything into place and prevent side links from moving and wearing on the full assembly and link movement to loosen the bushing.
You will notice the end of link opposite the bushing is cup shaped on the inside, the end the pin is pressed into. This cup area fits over the bushing in the link behind it.

Thanks for the replies.

I had a guy tell me that TD9 track will fit my HD5 just fine, I just need to use the TD9 pads as the AC pads won't bolt up. I have 33 sections ea. side.

Anyone confirm TD9 track will work on HD5?

Thanks,
Dyno

Best to find a track shop and do the asking . As the rail height and width also is important along with the sprocket pitch to roller contact.
Different pads may not be the right length to clear case on rear of teractor or other equipment mounted on tractor. You must have a HD5B dozer or tractor and not a 5G loader .
Then on the Cat D6-9U I had i ended up using D5 track but had to put on D5 segmented sprockets, but track fit front ideler and rollers.

Here is a link to track sizes and what they measure . You might get a idea from this of what else is close .

Thanks Coke for the info...the last thing I want to do is go thru the trouble of getting that track and find out it won't fit!

crawlerheaven.com has wear charts which give track dimensions and pitch. none are exactly like the hd5/6 but one is close, can't remember which one.

Hi Guys,

I found another track in the boneyard up at my ranch that looks really good but is 3 links short. Anyone have 3 good links with P/N 078835, 078836?

My machine has mis-matched tracks on it: the bad side that broke looks original and very thin rails, way beyond 100% worn. The other side has minimal rail wear on the links....I'm sure it was the mate to the set of links I just found in my bone yard.

The P/N on the right side (broken) track chain is 051845, 051846

The P/N on the left side (good) and spare chain is 078835, 075836. This chain has much stronger webbing between the rails and looks to be a better design.
