I bought a 1953 WD45 with a loader it ran when I bought it I cant seem to get it running now. It sat all winter and now I want to get it running and get rid of it. I Need to rerun all the wires from the starter, resistor and I think the coil. Is it possible to smoke either the resistor, coil or starter by constant cranking. any help would be appreciated. thanks I will try to post pictures

Welcome, And good tractor! We need some pictures too. If its still cranking your probably OK! Its when it quits cranking that you start to have the problems! I have let the smoke out of many wires! Check if you have fuel and spark at the plugs. Regards, Chris

Give it a shot of starting fluid, if it fires up then you have a gas problem. If it doesn't fire then you have a spark issue.

I had this exact problem with my wd45. Only after cleaning the gas tank and carb, putting a new fuel line, new points, coil, ext. I got it to fire and then not fire. I just about lost my mind. Walked away for a couple of weeks and checked the points and they were burned like I left the key on. So I went back got new points and same d@* thing....
Long and short the ignition switch was not operating properly. She was sometimes turning things off and sometimes turning everything on. Put a new switch in and magic.....
The funny thing is I kept telling myself I should replace the ignition at the beginning... The moral to this story is "Don't talk yourself out of your instincts. " Well most of them, anyway...... Steve

apparently the pictures I took are too big anyone know how to fix that? The tractor turned over strong then it started then I shut it off and tried it again and it would not fire. Then when I cranked it more it got weak then would not crank at all I thought it was a dead battery but when I put the charger on it said the battery was charged, I don't trust the charger. This was all before it sat. Does someone have a wiring diagram for the WD45. The goats trashed all the wires, little buggers. Would I be able to pick up a new coil and resistor at auto zone or is that a specific part for the WD45. The previous owner had the wires ran all willy nilly I had planned on redoing them anyway to neaten them up so they could not be ripped off. I will get new switches too. I plan on tearing into it first thing tomorrow morning, going to put the battery on the charger now.

can anyone recommend a coil that is available from napa, auto zone or advanced?
I took the coil, resistor battery and carburetor off I'm going to clean it tonite and then put it back in tomorrow morning before the stores open then make a parts run.

I think I got a coil for a 57 Chevy truck. It'll need a ballast restor though. I believe I used a ballast restor for a 66 dodge. The dodge resistor is a nice ceramic one with mounting holes it was easy to both it right to the coil mount. Seams to me the points were also for a 57 Chevy truck.

If I rember correctly the coil should be 1.5 ohms and the ballast should be 1.5 ohms to give you 3 ohms total of your running a 12 volt system. If you have a 12volt coil that says no external ballast required it should be 3 ohms. As long as your not pushing more than about 4 amps thru the points they'll last a long time.

Could be the resister is sending low voltage to the dist. or none at all. I don't see how they last as long as they do.

I replaced coil, resistor and battery now it cranks but it has no spark at the plugs.

I did the points and condenser still know spark. Could I have my wiring wrong ? Do I need an ame meter ?

Run a jumper directly from the battery to the coil if you have spark now start looking at your wiring if not it's in your distributor. Are you sure the points are set corectly

First thing, turn the ignition to the run position and check for battery voltage at the coil. If you don't have battery voltage there, you have found the problem.
If it were mine, I would pitch the resistor. Buy a 3 ohm coil made for any 4 cylinder engine. The one I have on the 45 was on a shelf at Farm and Fleet and listed for a Volkswagen.

I will try that when I get home I just have toggle switches one for the alternator and one for the battery I was able to redo the wiring to what was on previously. I am going to add a key too it and Ana's an Ame meter like the drawing shows. I will test to see if I have power to the coil. Thanks again

I Ran a wire from the battery straight to the coil and resistor and now I have spark. sprayed some starter fluid in the carburetor and it started sputtered ad stopped. this is with the gas on, I checked the gas line and it was not plugged up. I cleaned the carburetor when I started this project. should I clean it again?

Double check that ignition switch. When my switch went bad I would get power to the coil and then It would start and then sputter. Then it would repeat the process of starting and sputtering and then nothing..... But in full disclosure I am a rookie when compared to most of the guys on the forum. Steve
