Topic: Hour Meter InstallPosted: 23 Jul 2010 at 12:43pm |

I want to install an hourmeter on my WD-45.
I would like to go the extra step and wire it so that it reads only when the engine is running rather than whenever the ignition is turned on.
I know they can be wired thru an oil pressure switch to accomplish this.
Would a common low oil cutoff switch from a portable generator or such work for this?
Does the WD-45 provide enuf pressure to close the points on one of those switches?
Should I just hook it into the ignition and forget it? LOL
Thanks for any help.

A cutoff should work unless the idle pressure is down there a ways. I use a fuel pump safety switch. Those can be had down to 5 psi or so with a regular npt fitting. Not hard to do.

Go the extra and put a pressure switch in, you will not regret it as you will have accurate reading on hours.

What would you expect the time difference be from Key on ONLY vs KEY on/ Engine On? I would suspect the difference would be insignificant and not justifiable to go beyond connecting it thru the key switch, so why bother.

Google Tiny tach. They have some good hour meters that record only when the engine is firing. They have one wire that attaches to ground and one sense wire that wraps around a spark plug wire. This wire tell the hour meter that the engine is running and measures rpm. They are self powered by a battery and they can be mounted out of site with double sided tape or epoxy glue to not affect the original look or dash, or mounted in the open. They also give you an rpm read out to adjust your governor and idle speed. One model even has service reminders.
