 Topic: CA clutch size

Hey guys been lurking on this forum for a while gathering information as I am starting work on a CA that's been my grandpas since the 60's. That being said it has been parked in the barn since I can remember and I'm 33. It was parked because the clutch rod went out or so I was told. I am going to start working on her to get her running again and know for a fact it needs a clutch kit among other things to get her running. I was looking to buy a clutch kit but noticed there are 2 sizes 8.5 and 9. Is there a way to tell the size without taking it off and measuring it so I can order it and have it here when I need it or am I going to have to take it off measure and then wait? Thanks,

The G- B-C-CA shop manual I have on line http://www.geraldj.networkiowa.com/Trees/Allis-Chalmers-G-B-C-CA-Service.pdf in the CA specifications section page CA-6 says 8-1/2". The manual isn't dated. It has considerable details on the clutch disassembly and assembly on page CA-30.

If it is electric start it is an 8 1/2 in clutch. The 9 in clutch was used with the flywheels with not starter ring. Hope this helps.

The Rick that replied to your question rebuilds clutches and brake linings for old equipment as his job. Just PM him with any questions.

Thanks a bunch for the replies guys! Ordered the 8.5" and we'll see how it goes tomorrow. My great uncle, whose father owned an Allis dealer, was an Allis mechanic and is coming over tomorrow to split her and see what we can finish while he's in town.

The most common problem with the C and CA clutches in the clutch fork wears out where the actuating pin goes thru it. and them it wont push the throw out bearing far enought to disengage. its the u shaped strap iron piece in there. just take it out straighten it and weld back. I have been adding a small piece of pipe welded to the fork where the pin goes thru just put the pieces on your welding table put the pin throught the hole with a piece of pipe on it inside the U shape and weld it in place. be careful not to weld the pin it must rotate.

I'll check Dakota thanks. Tractor was originally parked in late 80's because clutch rod went out in field, that's what great uncle told my grandpa then, it was pulled in with handclutch. So today we'll see what is jacked up when we start splitting her.
