I am reassemblying the engine front gears, it seems the the gear that drives the magneto goes in too far (toward the magneto) about 1/4 the width of the gear, am I missing something, or is this normal?

Normal or not it can not be a problem as the magneto drive will not move back which holds the gear in place. They will move forward without the screw on the magneto side and the shaft will push/wear thru the cover.
