A friend has this B SN 6306. 1942 I think. It has wood on each side of the fenders?? Also wouldnt it of had steel wheels in the front?
Id upload pics but it says file size to large. Dang it.

Mine is 58292, and it's a 42. Wood on the fenders isn't correct I don't think.
Mine never was on steel, or someone did a lot of parts switching.
Not all tractors had steel on front, but more did than not during the war I believe.

open the picture in paint brush.. Then click on resize and get it to 800 x 600 or so and save it to desktop...... then down load to this site.. Many cameras save the photos as 3600 x 3000 or so.

there were close to 12,000 tractors built in 1939, so if you SN is really 63xx then it is a 1939. Look at the front rims. Are the centers bolted or rivet to the hub or plate ? Or do the wheels look like automotive style, one piece with 5 lugs to the center hub.

They do not have an auto style. More of a dust cap looking piece w 3 screws...

YEP... that would be pre- war. The wood on each side of the seat to space the fenders outward was not stock. You have hand brakes, no starter or generator, and the pre 1940 wheels on the front. Going by your SN, I think it really is a 1939.

It looks like standard B fenders with steel rear wheels added afterward.... Those rims did not go with those fenders from the factory ( don't think).... unless the tractor was ordered special with steel wheels in 1939 (???) ......... that is not a "War B" with the wide fenders and steel wheels.

I think a "war B" would look more like this ( not mine)... note the rear wheel hub design and the high air cleaner tube and wide fenders.

6306 would be a 1938. Wood is definitely not factory.

According to the 'Serial Number Reference' on this site -
the nearly 12,000 B's built was in 1938,not 1939, last serial 11,799.
6306 would be mid 1938.

didn't the 1938 models have the bakelite on the steering wheel covering the spokes on the steering wheel all the way to the hub, mine has a third type front wheel, with only a dust cap, which threads on covering the hub, and wheel is steel, only thing holding wheel on is nut and bearing under cap??

Very interesting. So the conclusion here is that the wood is not factory, the rear steel wheels were added by someone, and the front wheels are correct? This unit would have came w rubber all the way around...

What years did the B's have the non lugnut front tires on the wide front. I have one but not cast, it is pressed steel. Serial shows it is a 49.

Lug nut hubs were added in mid 1939, around serial 24000, steel wheels were optional before the war.

It is entirely possible that this tractor was ordered and shipped with this wheel combination(steel rear/rubber front). However, the lack of the thicker rear cast hubs makes one think otherwise.

Dakota Steve More B trivia. The rear wheel centers are 1938 vintage for rubber tires. 2 valve stem notches in a half moon shape, V shaped notches became standard in late 38 and most if not all 1939 Bs. engine------ if cast in 38 the casting number should end in a 10. The engine serial number 1n 1938 is hard to see stamped in rear of block. BExxxxx Seat back support straps are wide version Correct for 38 a fabricated welded clutch peddle is correct for all but very late 1938 Bs Steering wheel in not original 1938. All black hard rubber covered all over would be 38 Restoring a 38 back to original using all 38 vintage parts is a serious challenge

A lot could happen to a tractor since 1938,I'd love to see someone try to figure out some of the tractors I have put together over the years.  Chris Holmes at Elkwood VA used to put together a B,D12,CA combination tractor and hang Woods Mowers on them,saw one at an auction a few years lot of fun listening to the 'experts' trying to explain that tractor.
