Hi All,
Did you ever notice the little boxes on some of the forum threads where pictures are supposed to be?
Well, they are not there because of problems with storage.  There just isn't enough room for everything on here.  We need to do something if we want to see these in the years to come.

I wish that Darin (Darin Stratton) would get some bigger servers or at least one that would be just for putting all these pics on.  Actually (2)...one as a BACKUP!  Then we'd never lose these pics.  Do we need to start a SPECIFIC "Donate" benefit to get a couple of PC Servers for Darin?  Darin, tell us what you need?!

There are a number of guys that have their own sites, but what happens when they pass on or their Internet Provider drops out of it all.  It's happened!

We'd lose pics for the likes of some of the greats on here, Dick L, TomMN (Homepage), Allis dave, Sugarmaker, jpessek (uTube videos) and a BUNCH of others.  Some of these pics are priceless and would be lost.

What do you guys & gals think?  What do you think Darin?

I have to agree Ted. I've often wondered what would happen if photobucket changed. Most of our pictures would be gone.

I finally figured out why today, but I can't even get to the old tool to upload and choose forum saved photos. Finally found that it load if I use Chrome but not Internet Explorer 11. One of those browser quarks. The "image properties" tool is a little lacking though. It'd be nice if it had resizing options built into it or even the ability to delete a photo. I can see thought why you wouldn't want to let users delete their photos though and destroy the photo links in topics.

It'd be interesting to know how much storage the forum actually uses. Nowadays a 4Tb drive is down to about $200. Of course it takes work to get it setup and configured in a server.

Part of the problem that needs addressed is the size of pictures. I've been sizing photos to 640x480 which only takes about 100Kb of storage. An unsized camera phone photo could be 2-4Mb each. As much as the forum is used we could still eat up storage pretty fast. I think there should be like a 512Kb or 1Mb upload limit. With a 1Mb limit, 1Tb would hold 1 million photos. Smaller photos help the pages to load faster too.

I've thought about redoing the photos in my knowledgebase articles to all use forum storage so they won't get lost. I bet I could store a lot of them on the forum at only 100Kb each. Sounds like a lot of work though...

Another note its that YouTube Videos don't take up storage space on the forum. They are stored on YouTube. If I was Darin I wouldn't allow anyone to store videos on forum space. Videos will gobble up server space Gigabytes at a time. That's getting to be one of my growing battles with my servers at work.

Thanks for the ideas and your write-ups on how to resize and post images Ted. They help a lot of people enjoy the forum.

I've always downsized my photos before uploading, but there are lots on here that have problems doing it. I gotta thank Ted for his write-up on the issue.

It is very expensive to upgrade servers. You cannot just throw a drive at the system. When I was working I got to install upgraded servers every three years. The storage unit was not done as often. If I remember correctly, the one that was there when I retired was an 8 drive raid with a redundant 8 drives. I don't remember the size but raid arrays are very efficient.

Folks,
I like to post pictures, and sure like to look at them too! I think they help bring life to the forum. Lots of nice AC pictures and we sometimes get to know the owners better too.
Just my two cents!

I do not post pictures from Photo bucket anymore ,but when I did ,if I would delete pictures out of P-B then it would take it off posting like u guys are talking about.

After watching and reading how others post from their storage ,I resize my pictures and attach that way ,.NO MORE PHOTO BUCKET.

Consider that the forum has almost 17,000 members. If each person had a 1 GB file limit that's more than 17 TB and counting. For an ad-free site (besides vendors) that's an expensive server. If you make sure to resize photos to 800x600 or so before uploading using MS Paint, etc. you will notice they are just a couple hundred KB instead of 2 or 3 MB file size. Then you can get a lot more pics on here. I still prefer to upload directly to this site instead of linking from photobucket, etc. because of the uncertainty of being on an external site.

The upload tool was something built for a PC. It would probably take a major change to allow mobile uploads.

It's really very easy to upload from a cell phone, that's how I put all my pics on here. As mentioned above you'll need to downsize your pics, I use an app called Resize Me, I change to 800x450 image size. I use an Android phone so it may be different for an iPhone or others. A couple years ago I had posted directions on how to do it. I've read so many times on this forum about how hard it is to post pics but it's really not.

One possible 'solution', on a personal level, is to have a gmail( Google email ) account. I just got 3 the other day as my ISP email was down for 29 hrs...
Each Gmail account can have 15GB of data ( messages).THAT is a LOT of pictures, so my idea is that you email to your gmail account the pictures you want to keep 'somewhere', forever. Consider it a free 'offsite', kinda 'cloudy' storage system.

Yes Jay, that will work.  The problem is that when someone passes away, there goes the account and thus the pictures.  Dick L (Dick Lemmon) and TomMN (Tom Foss) come to mind.  We've all gone to their sites and looked at their pictures.  But what happens when they pass on and their site gets closed down?  They both have a LOT of educational and inspirational pics on their sites.  Pics that should always stay with this forum.

HECK, what happens if Darin expires??!! Confused Cry Ouch Shocked

The future of Allis-Chalmers is all these young guys we have on here.  We (ALL of US) need a backup plan for the future.  I guess I'm thinking more about these things, as I get closer to 70 and have seen us lose so many of our experts in the past few years.  The guys that MADE Allis-Chalmers what it is today are getting fewer and fewer.

I for one, would like to know what Darin's thoughts are on this subject.......

Ted,
I bet Dick L and TomMN would be willing to give people a copy of their site on CD or flash drive. They are fairly simple sites programming wise, and you could just run them locally from your computer.

I'm glad your thinking about this. I have before too. I'm one of the young guys and the information here are priceless as are the people that take time to share.

I'm turning slowly into a dinosaur, in my younger days I would study up on my html and add some bling to my site.  I still write my stuff with notepad.  I have a translation dictionary on my site that should have next/previous arrows to page back and forth.  If any genealogy addicts want to read old Norwegian it is usually written in Dano-Norwegian which is a dead language and the online translators don't do well with it.  http://allis01.com/fossto/Home/Ordbog/Dansk-Norsk_Ordbog.html  Everything from A to økseskaft.  I am able to use it and just haven't gotten around to adding some pagination.

It would be nice if some Internet pages were  more permanent, the stuff we'd like to disappear seems to be always available.

Call bull all you want! All I'm saying is I don't have any trouble and I've had three different phones, all have been droids, others may be different. I click on the tree box with the arrow, window pops up and where it says choose file just tap on that and another window comes up with file options to pick from. Scroll down to albums, gallery or something like that, wherever your pics are on your phone, choose that and then find what picture you want and tap on it then it takes you back to the forums and you'll get a message that says please wait while the image uploads. That's all there is to it. Sounds like a lot when I type it out but takes about 30 seconds to do. As mentioned before it's best to resize the photo first.

I might add you can't use the message box at the bottom of the page, I can't anyway, you have to hit the "post reply" with the arrow and do it from there.

I can use the reply box at the bottom of the page. A lot of it come down to browsers. They all tend to render pages a little different. I remember in HTML class, I'd make a perfect page that would run in Internet Explorer, then the professor would come over and make me open it in Mozilla Firefox. Then it look all screwed up.

This works, until you have your picture allotment used up.  Then you have to delete some pics to add others.  I went through that a LONG time ago.  So there goes your pic.......
This is what I'm trying to stop.  Especially all of the rebuilding ones that are pinned now.  Unless those pics are attached to THIS FORUM, they will eventually be lost.  Sure they are on photobucket, but like I say, they close down, or get rid of the free storage, or that person dies.................there goes the pics.
