I have a series 1 d-17 with a loader that has double acting cylinders. The single acting pressure coming out of the transport valve is 3,400 psi. When it goes through the 4 way spool to change it to double acting my pressure is 600 psi. I put a new prince 4 way spool with a pressure relief range from 1,500 to 3,000 psi. With the pressure relief turned all the way up I only have 800 psi going to my loader. Any ideal what is going on.

How did you plumb the return line to the tractor from the new value bank. The valves are open center it sounds to me like you put a t into the supply and return lines and have two open center valves in parallel so one is always open and can't build pressure. The two valves have to be in serries. Oil flow from the pump to your new valve them to the original valve in the tractor which will return it to the tank. Either valve can be first but the output of one open center valve must feed the input of the second.

The factory pump in a d17 serries 1 is low flow high pressure I don't remember the actual pressure but I added a front mounted pump and tank to mine because I have head of the built in pump blowing lines on implements because the pressure is too high.

The return line comes back to the 4 way and the bypass goes back through the transport valve and then to the reservoir.

I took the old 4 way out and replaced it with the new one.

I guess I don't understand how the 4 way spool takes single acting to double acting so I can't help. Sorry.

sounds to me like somthing is hooked up wrong or relief valve is messed up put a flow meter on the return to tank and see what your gpms are

we run a pair of remotes on our wd with an auxillary valve. pump is a little weak but it runs double acting cylinders fine

It is a new 4 way with a relief valve but I could only get the valve to change 200 psi from all the way out to all the way in. The relief is suppose to range from 1.500 to 3,000 but all I get coming out of the 4 way is 700 to 800 psi under a load.

It really sounds like there are two oil paths back to the tank and that one is always open. Can you take some pictures of the entire system that would really help

Wish I could help but I am in WAY OVER MY HEAD!
However, I wonder if when you have the system plumbed properly if you would have enough flow to move the loader cylinders properly. Especially since the D-17 hyd system is a low volume high pressure system. Good Luck! Bill Long |

Bill if the lines don't blow from over pressure you can run the load it will lift more weight with higher pressure but be dog slow.

Are you sure you turned the pressure relief all the way UP and not all the way down?

Dan I will take a pic tomorrow evening, I have a in pressure coming into the 4 way and an out going back through the transport valve which goes back to the tank. I have a pressure going to my loader from the 4 way spool and a return coming back to the 4 way. Only 1 return going back to the tank. The new 4 way spool relief could be messed up. I will post pic tomorrow evening. Thanks.

I was just thinking someone had installed a single spool dual action valve on my d17 serries 1 before I started using it. Probably something my grandfather did back when he got it. Anyway i had a 3 point hitch wood splitter on it and everytime I extended the cylinders on the wood splitter the 3 point hitch would fall everytime I returned the cylinder the hitch would raise. I asked my uncle and he just said oh ya but we never used the lift arms and the hydraulics at the same time. If I remember correctly the control valve was tied into the line going to the lift arms normally with a return line added to the side of the torque tube. In order to get it to work I had to play with the Draft control and 3 point hitch controls. If I remember correct the lift needed to be in the hold position and the Draft control had to be set to the extreme so it would not lift the arms. If you work those two levers on the left of the column you might get it working. There was something to do with the fact that the normal return of the single ended system in the tractor is still in effect and the new valve added a second return line. As I said in the end I needed more hydraulic flow so I added a front mounted pump and a tank.

It move fairly fast up and down and I used a gauge when turning the relief up, it is screwed all the way in.

The two levers on the steering column have to be all the way up which raised the lift arms. When the lift arms reach the top all the pressure goes to the 4 way spool. I have 3,400 going into the4 way I put a gauge in line to dead end the pressure then it has an automatic relief that kicks in and bypasses all pressure. By going through the 4 way the fluid keeps moving in a circuit and the automatic relief doesn't kick in.
