Hello, BIL bought this lawn tractor from a dealer because it had 3pth & front hydraulics witch he wanted to put on another 1920 he had. Dealer told him that tractor needed a cam shaft. I bought tractor from BIL and the engine ran good, after cutting grass with it for about 15 mins governor quit working & engine rev up. Could someone tell me where & what to look for before I pull engine off of tractor ? thanks Dave

Check for binding in the external linkage prior to tearing into the engine but the governor gears were problematic on those and when the gear sheds it's teeth what you describe is what happens. If the linkages are adjusted correctly the engine should slow down to idle but when you increase it just a bit the engine runs away.  As for replacing the gear the news isnt good as  good bit of the engine must come apart to replace it.

Thanks Butch, you described the idle & run away engine rpm to a tee on this thing. I looked down the oil filler pipe & see the plastic gear meshing & turning with the cam gear when I turn crank by hand. On the rite side of engine in behind the oil stick tube there is star headed long stem bolt that was loose & had backed out 2 turns or so, would that have any thing to do with this problem? Thanks Dave
