Good tractors, I assume this one is gas?

3 Pt can be had via Allis 3 Point Snap Coupler adapter or there are numerous 3rd party makers of retrofit units.

What are you gonna do with a D-17?
I think the power director "makes" the tractor. Look for fault in it by driving downhill and slowing the motor. Youre looking for it to come out of gear as well as the PD to snap itself into neutral.
Does that machine have power steering? How are the brakes?
Looks good in the picture!

Thanks guys,  i'll definitely check the tranny on a drive.
We got around ten acres of food plots on our place.   Been dragging disks with the skid steer and running the snot out of my four wheeler pulling my old 2 row planter.   Neighbor has an old two bottom (pull type) that im interested in getting.  Got some compaction issues in the four acre field.   Not a whole lot of purpose maybe for a tractor like that i know, but i grew up on a farm and have high hopes of adding on to the place we have now.. Lord willing.        thanks again guys.    Chris

BTW yes it has power steering

That is a nice looking series I, the guys have mentioned all the faults but one.  That tractor does have power steering, and it looks like it has been maintained with at least one new hose, but a lot of these tractors, the P/S doesn't work or work right, just something to look at, it's not the end of the world if it doesn't work, but can be upwards of $500 to fix with AGO parts, depending on what is wrong.

I GOT IT!
couldn't be happier.     Power steering works good.  Couldn't get it to come out of gear.
Didn't have a steep hill though.   But all in all it looks like its gonna be a good tractor for us.    Now i gotta get it towed out to the property.
You guys are gonna be getting a lot of questions from me as time goes by.  Big smile

I don't want to insult, but I also don't want you seeing dollar signs.  If you tow it, keep the speed down, and the tranny out of gear, if you tow it fast, say over  20-25MPH with the tranny in gear, but the two speed in neutral, you risk over speeding the two speed clutch pack, and it coming apart.

So leave the foot clutch out, and the two speed in high or low, but the main tranny in neutral, also make sure the oil level is up in the main tranny. Right hand dipsstick in front of the gear shift while seated.

Again not to insult, this is from experiance, I knew a guy who didn't know the internals pull one home at "he said 30 MPH or so", and the two speed came apart with a bang, because the tranny was in third gear, and the two speed was in neutral.  A quick look at the tach face, I figured the two speed outer clutch housing was turning over 18000 RPM when it let go.

There were 4 series of the D-17. Yours is the   earliest version of the D-17 with a series 4 being the last. 1,2,and 3 are basically the same. most improvements came with the ser 4

Ser 4 has better hyd and 3 pt came as factory option

Well there were officially two series, but four overall

Series I, Series II, and officially Series III, and Series IV.

Just differences in the tractor, they got better with age, you might say!

Great tractor Lucky ! D-17 is the best all around chore tractor ever made. Can do almost any job on the farm. Looks like tires are in good shape.Any questions about it I am sure someone on here will have an answer. My best advice is to find operators/service manual .That will answer most questions and the guys on here can answer the rest.

Why not drive it home? Seat time is good therapy whether in the field or on the roadThumbs Up If you have compaction issues, you might want to look around for a Snap Couple subsoiler.

thanks,  no insult taken.  having it towed on a wrecker.  definitely wouldn't want to run her like that.                      You could tell by the pic it was a series I?   glanced at the numbers on the bellhousing real quick when i was there and thought i saw sevens (64, 65).
On the 3 pt. adapters,  are they a big deal to get ahold of?  will be wanting to do that.

No big deal on the adaptors, several vendors on here sell the 3 pt adaptors.Basically there are 2 styles of 3 pt adaptors. One style will hook up and unhook quickly (in case you use both 3 pt. and snap coupler equpt.) The other style mounts more solidly and is beefier but is harder to change back and forth.(best if you are only going to use 3 pt. equipt.)

It would be better to have a roll-back carry it home than a wrecker pull it.

3-point adapters are not hard to find, kinda pricey, but worth the money, try to find a good used one.  Some are better than others.  The small round muffler, stenciling, pd lever, p/s pump, all combine in a way that tells me it's a Series I, but the big give away is the PD lever, only the series I had an open button on top, all the others had a thumb guard cast in.  The other items line up to tell me the lever hasn't been changed.

That's what i meant to say   "roll back"   rather than wrecker.  Your'e right,  i wouldn't want to to spin her that long on the road either.

Orange Blood,  i'm sure your'e right.  good eye on the PD button.
Our disk is pull type, the planter is pull type and the neighbors disc we plan on getting is pull type; so we will definitely be wanting to still use those, but in the future i may get a tiller, and possibly a no til planter, etc.,   so, i suppose i would want the quick type hitch adapter?

Thanks bradley,  i could tell this was a community of good folks right away.  Smile

I live north of Springfield Mo. on Stockton Lake.  The farm is north of Lamar a few miles.
We got a fellow that has a rollback that owns an auto parts store in Lockwood who really does right by us.  Called him when i got back this evening and he was on the road for vacation but was nice enough to have someone take care of it for us this weekend.  He'll be running dry over there 70 miles and then loaded another route about 90 miles to the farm and quoted me in the neighborhood of 180 bucks.  Couldn't argue with that.

If you are going to add a 3pt tiller (and maybe other 3 pt implements down the road; seriously consider the drawbar mounted 3 pt hitch. The "wishbone" adaptor is very convenient when using AC snap couple and 3 pt implements; however it does not work all that great with 3pt implments that are "pushed" backwards (snowblowers) or tend to push the tractor (tillers) or for drawbar attached implements; they are good for pull type 3pt implements (plows, discs, etc). Sounds like most of your implements are drawbar pulled or 3pt; another reason to look hard at the drawbar mounted 3pt hitch.
The 17 has enough power to handle a 3X16 plow in most soils without stressing the 60 -/- yr old machine, a 12-14' disc, and a 7-8 foot tiller. If yours is in good condition; it will quickly become a favorite.
