Would the starter for a 54 CA be different than the starter on a late 56 CA (with push start lever) thanks for any info.

I believe all B,C, CA starters for 20 years would be interchangeable.. You might have to rotate the nose on some as original had the switch on the bottom and later some were on the top.

I counted the teeth on my starter and it is 14 tooth (49-54 CA) and not the 55-58 CA 12 tooth. But my 57 has a 14 tooth starter which worked for years. Would a 12 tooth starter work on all flywheels? I cant imagine they changed to flywheels on the later models. Is the 12 tooth better than the more common 14 tooth... can I use a 12 or 14 on all CA's. I guess I should dig out my parts manual.

AGCO parts site says 70225586 used prior to CA14435 and 70225889 from CA14435 and on. CA14435 would have been sometime in 1952. It additionally recommends using 70225889 as replacement. This would seem to imply that they may be used interchangeably. Edit: These are both 14 tooth starters so I retract my statement on impact: The likely impact is one will spin slightly faster but require more current from the battery. Some websites that sell these indicate that a 12 tooth starter is not compatible but no details as to why specifically. Whatever is used should match the ring gear.

Both 586 and 889 parts listed above are 14 tooth.

Ideally the spacing of the teeth on the starter should match the spacing of the teeth on the ring gear but there may be enough tolerance for either one to work. I thought the B, C and CA would interchange.

Where can you buy a 12 tooth bendix for a B, C, CA starter ? .... Im sure there are 12 tooth units, but maybe NOT for the CA ?? .... Lots of companies used DELCO starters.

Would it be reasonable to just replace the starter with one like it had when I got the CA over a decade ago?

So all the books say the tractor uses a 14 tooth starter, you have a 14 tooth starter that has worked for 50 years... and you want to know if its OK to buy a 14 tooth starter ?
I vote YES.. note the YEARS... Edited by steve(ill) - 11 Nov 2023 at 9:08pm |

I do know that the WD starter has fewer teeth than the C starter (I forget the actual tooth count and am too lazy to go dig it out my storage shed). The C starter drive can be installed in a WD starter but the housing needs to be rotated and re-drilled; I am currently running this starter in my Model C. I see no way that a 12 tooth starter drive would work in a CA without damaging the flywheel.

FWIW, D-14s had two different starter/ring gears. Early D-14s were 6 volt, mid '58 ? 12 volters came out. I had a '51 CA, pushrod start and think it was 6 volt. Dang NEVER should have sold that one, either...... great now I'm depressed.

The B/C model Tractors used the Delco 1107043 Starter. When the CA came out, Allis went with the 1107096 Starter. Both Starters are interchangable in these models. Both carry a 14 tooth drive assy. If you have a 12 tooth CA Starter, it has the wrong drive assy in it. HTH Steve@B&B
