Occasionally there have been questions and problems with the low range hollow shaft on 7000 & 8000 series power director tractors. This was more of a problem with the earlier 7000 series and I have personally never seen an 8000 series fail here. The shaft could either break or seize to the high range hollow shaft. Breakage causes no low side on the power director. Seizing causes the engine to stall as you let the clutch out. Either problem is a split behind the engine and removal of the power director assembly. Obviously, it is best to completely remove the transmission to lower the front of the counter shaft and get those pieces out. BUT, I have carefully torched out those pieces before from the front and not removed the transmission. Once you get the high gear out of the way, you need to carefully notch the old low side gear to get it past the gear on the counter shaft. The sl*g and debris from cutting needs to be kept at a minimum if possible. Clean and flush that area if needed. Notch the replacement gear similar to this and reassemble. I have done this twice that I can remember and to my knowledge, both tractors are still going.

Nice tip. Hope I never need it. Had trans out to replace front bearing on input. Had run a lot of metal through things so I chickened out and replaced all the bearings. 84 8070 Was probably wasted money but I sleep good.
