I'm having trouble getting my two bottom plow to go in the ground.  Wondering if the shears are worn too much.  Does anyone know the measurments on the shear so I can check it?  If I need new ones, where is the best place to get them?

Try tipping it forward and then you will need to tilt side to side to level the bottoms.

First go through the proper steps of setting up a plow:
Drive left tire up onto a 6x6 or 8x8 block, lower the plow, and level side to side.

Next, level front to back, with the landsides being almost level, lower in front by maybe 1/4"

Also make sure the lift links are looped under and then rotated up (shortest position)

If it still won't plow, then maybe you do need shares.  Which type of share do you have?  Old style is a hook and 1 bolt, newer styles are less metal, flat, with 3 or 4 bolts.

Also you will need to know the size of the shares, measure between frame rails, that will tell you what size they are (even #'s 12, 14, 16" plows)

I learned this trick on a garden tractor site for setting up for plowing.

I set it up and it plowed great with no further adjustments.

As far as I know, new shares are impossible to find.  Best bet is to follow the picture advice and get it set right.  Even fairly worn, it should do ok in soft spring ground.

if its the old style, a good blacksmith can re-draw the point .  and there are some older plow points out there, that can be welded or brazed to the shares, but that is becoming a lost art...Wink

I couldn't get my No. 53 plow to go into the ground and the shares were the problem.
Got one from Dave the plowman, found one new bottom here, and 'rebuilt' one myself. Now it goes in 8" easy. Also seems to pull easier too.

There isn't a plow made that can do much with worn shares.  I have a limited supply of NOS plow shares for AC plows available. The first thing you need to know is what bottom assembly your plow has, a part number off of one of the wearing parts would be the easiest way to determine that. Go to the knowledge section and read " Plow parts 101"
If it was fun to pull in LOW gear, I could have a John Deere.
Real pullers don't have speed limits.
If you can't make it GO... make it SHINY

My 1-16 and 2-14 trailer plows wouldn't go in the ground for nothing. I put a picture of my 1 bottom on here and several people from across the country told me that my plow had lost its suck.

So maybe take a picture of them and put it on here- its amazing what these guys can tell you.

I am very lucky that a local machine shop still reworks shares- even has points on hand. His grandfather used to rework my grandfathers shares.

Got the 1-16 done and couldn't believe the difference- I had to adjust the plow to keep it from going too deep instead of trying to lift the wheels off the ground trying to get it to go in!

Reworked the ones on the 2-14,  same result.

The shares  are pretty wicked when he's done with them.

Haven't touched the three bottom yet, that one will go as deep as I let it, no problem.

For littlemarv, can you tell us the name and location of this machine shop, for those of us that would like to use that service.

I called the shop today, told them people were looking to get shares reworked. He said he would gladly do it, but UPS doesn't stop there to pick them up for return shipping. And he doesn't really have time to drive somewhere to ship them.
We got to talking about how this is becoming a lost art. He said when they found out points were no longer going to be made, they bought up every one they could find, he has plenty. When he runs out, he said he will have to come up with a way to make them. Sounds like he enjoys what he does.
$25 per share.

So, if someone wants, I guess we could arrange something where you can ship them to me, I can take them up there, and ship them back when they are done. I'd have to tack on a little something for my time and gas. PM me if you are interested.

I think USPS goes to every bussiness. Measure the shares and see if they will fit in a Flat rate box. If they will fit in a FR box shipping is very reasonable better than UPS of Fed up.

The bussiness can even order and have boxes sent to their bussiness, they are free too.

I get a 10 pack of meduim FR boxes to start my fall bees wax shipping. Mail man even picks up the full boxes.

The Large Flat Rate box is 12x12x5.5 inches.

I think I can get two points inside dianglely.
