Hi I wonder can some one help me as I am trying to register a WC tractor in the UK bought from the USA, it was sold to me as a 1936 serial number 15174, i just cleaned the serial number and it looks to me 156174 ? (an extra didget) when i check on line in yesterdays tractors it indicates that serial numbers for 1936 had only 5 didgets ?? as indicated on purchase Can anyone help identify if the number would be 15174 as sold or would 156174 be correct for 1936 ? I guess the final drive could have been changed at some point for a newer styled version but the tractor i have is definitely the unstyled type

1936 would only be a 5 digit number.There will be a date stamped on the left side of the transmission also,check that and see what it says.

156174 is a 1947 serial number. Like you mentioned the rear end may have been changed. One way you can tell if it is a early rear end or a later rear end is the location of the oil fill plug. I'm doing this from memory so you may want to get this confirmed by other forum members but the earlier rear ends in most unstyled tractors I have seen had the fill plug in the center of the casting and I believe it went in at an angle. The later rear ends had the oil fill plug off center and it went straight into the back. By looking at the oil fill plug you should be able to tell if it is a later rear end

I thought the early ones had the plug in the housing and the later ones had an elbow in the rear end to actually raise the oil level a bit?
Not arguing, just asking.

Hi Thanks for that, I have looked on the left side of the gearbox and cannot see any date, I have also removed some of the paint with a windy wire brush, could you be more pacific as to where i should be looking ? top/side/back/front, I assume you do mean the gearbox ?

Yes the oil filler is on the left of center and not at an angle or in the middle, so chances are its been changed at some point !!!

I've never seen one with an elbow. Probably something someone did to make it easier to put the oil in it. It was always a messy job topping off the oil when you had to put it into the side!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure your rear end has been changed if that is where the filler plug is and with that serial number.
I have seen pictures of UK tractors with license plates on them. Do all tractors have to be registered and licensed in the UK?

Hi Bob Yes all vhicles need to be registered with a numberplate from the DVLA (driver and vehicle licensing agency) inorder to have a road fund licence and insurance , I can get a numberplate to coinside with the age but I need to prove it, now I have an issue that the serial number does not correspond, and need to send photo evidence, I will need to get creative!!! it will be easier than trying to explain that they were only made up to 1939 and the final drive has been changed with a later virsion.

At some point they quit putting a date on the side of the transmission gearbox. I've seen several without a date cast. Take some pics and show us what you got.

#15174 is 1946' styled wc. last year unstyled 1938. 1939 first year styled' bullet tank type.

No, I bought it from Wells MN, a Mr Benns, don't know about up side down ? what the tractor or one of the brothers ? Its definetly an unstyled, must have had the final drive replaced at some time hence the wrong serial number

I found a plate with a number on just behind the air intake pipe, i am guessing this is the engine number WC 289760PA Is it possible to date this number ?

Dont know the year but thats definitely a later block then 1936. I'm not sure when they moved the engine serial number to the side of the block but I know the earlier blocks had the number on the back of the block right above the bell housing.

Engine serial #'s are not exact but WC289760PA would fall into the 1951 WD motor.

Is it styled or unstyled? Can't imagine Ladd would be wrong, he's a stand up guy. Might just be the easiest to officially licence it using the serial number you have on the tractor and the year that matches that number.

Thanks every one To be honest I not bothered about the numbers matching, I am more than happy with the tractor, and cant imagine there are many 80 yr old tractors running arround with all origional parts I will try register it as 1936 using numbers I have and see what happens, it can't be younger than 1938 for sure
