She starts after two or three swings no problem but as soon as I give her a little throttle she cuts out, I have cleaned the carb, cleaned the air intake and fitted new mesh, tried adjusting the main jet but makes no difference !! she will tick over all day but as soon as i try to give her a bit more gas she dies on me Any sugestions would be appreciated

My B was that way last fall. My problem was in the distributor. I got it rebuild, and no more trouble!

I have checked the needle its free, not sticking !!!
I dont have a distributor, could it be a weak Mag ? if so then I am guessing I will need to send it for an overhall, cant think what else to do ??

Are you certain that your choke is hooked up correctly and not backwards. Seen it before and tractor would run at idle but then flood out as soon as you hit throttle or try to put under load.

I was thinking bad mag. They have a start circuit which is different then the running circuit. I think it is probably easy to fix if it starts. I would probably get in touch with Steve at B & B custom circuits. I am sure he can sort it out for you.

Before you spend money on magneto work or tear the carb apart again, do you have full flow thru the gas line to the carb bowl? Take the drain out of the carb bowl and turn the gas on. You should have a nearly a pencil sized continuous flow from the tank out the drain hole. If not, clean the line or replace it, clean the tank, or whatever is causing the fuel restriction.
A lot of these old girls have had a rubber gas line and a fuel filter added. The rubber line can collapse and the filter can be partially clogged or, it could be a filter not made for gravity flow. Best thing , in my book, is a steel line with a good sediment bowl and screen. The gas cap can also have the vent plugged and a vacuum is created as gas drains out of the tank, slowing or stopping flow. |

an idea on checking for fuel flow is to take a hypodermic (without the Needle) and fill it full of gas.. slowly squirt it in while someone opens the throttle... If it stays running, you've got a fuel issue.... othewise probably mag... or timing.

Thanks everyone for all your support, unfortunetly I have to close the garage door as I going away for several weeks, The tank I lined and also run a new copper line from the tank to the carb, I do have a feeling the carb is not correct, but on saying that it must have been running in the past before I bought it
The shringe is a good Idea and will try that method on my return if only to rule the fuel starvation theory !!!

when the engine starts to cut out I would have thought the governor would start hunting but the arm never moves, its completely static.............could this be a contributing problem ?

Did the fuel stop again? Sounds like you need to clean the tank. I wouldn't expect much of the governor until the fuel is constantly running at the carb. As that is a gravity feed system one of the easiest tests is to strap a boat gas tank to it right above that one and plumb it into the carb the boat tanks I have seen have a fuel outlet with a shutoff at the bottom. Those make great test tanks. I have also parked beside a tractor with a good tank and run a line from that tank to the tractor in question it shows you if stuff is comming out of the tank or floating around in it. A corba in your tank or an old dead float which fell off the fuel gauge are good for that block it a while move away and then move back you can chase that float around for days... not that I would have done something like that before......

Did you get the venturi in right side up I put one in upside down in a B once it ran just like you described. You need to center
the throttle butterfly in the bore also.

Thank you, thank you, thank you...........
The only thing i can think to discribe myself this morning is a compleete plonker..... I been eyeing this piece of metal by the hedge for weeks when cutting the lawn and thought it must have come off a water jetting machine i was working on a few weeks back, then a few days ago i picked it up and put it away safe !!!! when you mentioned this morning VENTURI I went straight to this mystery part and thought OMG can't be, went to the garage against the wifes wishes because today i fly, striped the carb down and low and behold the mystery part fell straight into place, rebuilt the carb and Allis was out of the shed like a bolt of lightening !!!!!!! If you had not mentioned VENTURI i probably would never have sorted this problem and Allis would have remained dormant for years to come, thanks to all who supported me through this trubled time and especialy to you for hitting the nail on the head, this episode I will never forget and go down in my book as the biggest blunder of all time. |

You're definitely not the first one who left the venturi out!! Happens even to experienced carb rebuilders if they get distracted!
