Picked up a 59 d17 narrow front today. Non running.Gas. Wish I could upload pics but cant figure it out. Anyway have a few questions. First off is there anyway to check for gear popping without a running engine? Seems to shift good. Next I drained the oil and wow it was thick like pudding.. like you can scoop it with a fork. Not much hope in the motor. Its not stuck but I bet it either knocks or smokes like crazy. Havent got that far yet. While draining I noticed the flow was restricted stuck my finger in there and theres a flap of metal that I can push up and down? Maybe the pickup came loose or is it some kinda baffle? Had a lot of oil in it filled almost 2 drain pans. Thoughts?

I would check the compression. Might as well see how it runs if you can before tearing it apart. I've heard of a lot of stories of guys taking an old Allis Chalmers out of the weeds, putting fresh gas in and starting right up. One way to check the gears is to run it down a steep hill in gear and see if it pops out (make sure your breaks work first)

Brakes work so ill try that. Im gonna at least drop the oil pan to see what the loose piece is. Im guessing its the pickup tube and rather than fix they just ran it with like 10 quarts of oil

The hill test is going to need some resistance in the gear train to actually check for pop out, so you will have to be careful, and put it into gear, and lightly drag the clutch in and out, to simulate engine back pressure.
I agree with seeing what you have before you write it off. The thick oil could be bad, or it could just be a long time on an oil change, and the motor might not be shot. If it is loose, try getting her running as suggested above. As far as what is in the pan, that you felt, well that is probably going to require pulling the pan, but at least see what you have first, who knows.

I will try to make it run. points look good, carb needs serious attention as does the gas tank. ill put a battery in it tonight and whirl it over. Quicky clean the carb and run off a lawn mower tank. I just wonder about the oil pan, if the pickup is loose I don't want to starve the engine for oil, and I also don't really want to waist Two gallons of new oil either. I just got rid of all my "good" used oil. not putting the pudding back in.
anyone know if its even possible for the pickup tube to come loose or break off? ive never had a pan off one of these motors |

Ok after looking at pics on google it looks like the pickup screen sits the same level as the oil pump so I should be able to use the regular amount of oil then. Im gonna pour some diesel in there though to flush out some of the gunk first.

How loose? That pickup on the bottom of the oil pump has some up and down pivot movement. If it's dropped to the bottom of the pan and is not attached to the pump then yes you'll want to drop the pan to fix and see what else you find.
If that turns out okay and you don't have to drop the pan, I'd start with half oil and half diesel fuel in the engine to run it bit w/o any load to clean out the pan sludge. Then drain and put in all oil. Mike |

Haha. Ok I did not know that the pickup can move. Its not sitting on the bottom of the pan its slightly above it. I guess the flow restriction I saw was just sludge coming out. Based on the gas tank smell test id say this has been sitting 5 to 10 years

actually now that I think about it, you might be moving the pickup screen, which could still be properly attached, and doing it's job exactly like it is supposed to. The screen has a little bit of up and down play, but I cannot remember if it is positioned in the vicinity over the drain hole or not.

Mike's right...the pick up does pivot or move up and down rather easily, so that's nothing to worry about. It has a tad more movement than you think. It's close to the drain hole. Rick

Well hit a roadblock. The starter isnt working. Pulled it off and cleaned it up. Found hammer marks. So I tapped it a little and bench tested it. The dang thing blew a hole in the front of it. Scared the chit outta me. I guess some cleaner got in there and ignited. Its a little hole im going to investigate further. Might be making a trip to the boneyard in the morning. Are there any other models that use this starter?

If you think it is ready to start you could always tow start the d17. Then you could see how it runs before you try to find that starter.

There was a couple but I was looking for wd stuff at the time so didnt look the d's over much. Starters may be long gone. That place is awsome though thanks for tellin me bout it

Ok went to MAW salvage they had 2 I bought them both. Dont know if they work or not but gonna give it a shot tonight. They actually have 3 d17s there. You gotta hunt for them though!

Put the starter on and spun it over. 0 compression on 2 cylinders. The motor had some water in it too. Other 2 seem to be fine. One spark plug has a mashed end... guess its off with the head :(
