Has anyone ever used electrolysis to clean out a carb? I read that if you use a carbon rod as the sacrificial rod the carb will not rust like using steel. I am thinking about doing my WD-45. I have to reset the float so I thought maybe do it as long as it apart. Any thoughts or comments?

I've never heard of doing a carb that way. If you have access to a glass bead blasting cabinet that works perfect to clean up a carb. Just screw out all the jets & stuff before doing it. Mike

With brass and iron parts there might be some critical items like jets sacrificed. You don't need that. And the critical passages guarded by jets are what electrolysis won't reach.

http://www.fordgarage.com/pages/electrolyticderusting.htm Here is a link to the article I was referring to. Hope the link works. Getting to the passages was a concern to me because electrolysis is line of sight. I don't think I will bother now!

I soak the pieces in carb cleaner for a couple hours or overnight, then wire brush the crud off. followed by a bath in vinegar. Leave for a day, gets the rust you cant reach. use some soapy water followed by compressed air, make sure to get the passages clear. should be like new.

As Mike mentioned, there's nothin' like getting the rust out of a carb and getting it nice n' clean like Glassbeading. Here's the process our customer's carbs go through. If the carb is pretty mucky, I first scrap the heavy crap off, and then dunk it in the tank for a day or so to melt the rest off. It then gets soap washed inside and out, then heads to the Glassbeader. After the beading is done, back to the soap wash again for round two to get any glassbead out. Next trip is to the pre-assembly bench where all threads are chased, circuits & cavities are cleaned with ball brushes, wire and or pipe cleaners. Also, any throttle bore work needed is done. Next a wash down and blow out with Brakekleen and compressed air, and then on to the paint bench. A visit to the assembly bench to be assembled and set to specs. BTW, you can do this on all one bench at home. LOL! And that's the process. Obviously, you don't have to be that elaborate, but just make sure you get the passages, inlet and bowl clean!

I am thinking about using EVAPO-RUST on some carburators to remove rust.
Anyone try this method? |

I have always used the electrolysis tank to do the top and bowl of a carb if it is real rusty and I have all the innerds removed.
