Hi all, now I know ED40's aren't all that common in the US, but I know there are a few, and I know a few UK guys read this forum, so I'm hoping someone can help.
I need to reline the brake shoes on my 1965 Depth-o-matic, and the pin through the bottom of the final drive casting which the shoes are attached/hinged on refuses to move, I've removed the grub screw, all the linkage and adjusters are removed and the shoes themselves are moving freely.
I've soaked in penetrating fluid, I've heated them, I've beaten them, I've swung on them and still the damn things will not budge an inch!
So, my questions are, has anyone else done this job and how did they do it? have I missed something? or do I just need to resort to drastic measures and cut the things out?
If it seems like a good idea, do it. It's easier to apologise than to get permission.

Do you know anyone who has an impact driver?  Perhaps you can attach a hard dowel to the chuck and drive them out that way.

trouble is, the inner end of the pin is inside the casting, no way to get behind it to drive it out, looks like they should just pull out, but they just rusted in solid.

I’m not familiar with the ED40 but I think I would try to weld a nut to it before cutting it out. I would use a nut that was as big as I could get but still smaller than the pin diameter to the pin by welding the inside (threaded part) of the nut. Then you can put a wrench on it to wiggle it back and forth to break it loose. I’ve used this many times to remove broken of bolts and studs. I’ve had better luck using a stick welder over a mig. I’ve also sometimes use a washer that is slightly smaller than the nut size to keep from welding to the side of the housing.

Many Thanks for the link DougS, those WD brakes are as near as makes no difference the same as the ED40, so I shall try that method.
Stray: already tried that! :) nuts broke off and took half the visible part of the pin with them!
