hello,
on the intake of my 170's intake manifold is a port of some kind with what looks like a connection point for a wire.  Also, I'm not sure if this should be the way it looks, but a line runs to a bulb in the engine return line.  Can anyone give me an idea if (1) this is correct, and (2) what the purpose for this peice is?

It is the pre-heat system that Perkins used. I haven't had one that worked yet.....

and I suppose you've had a few, from the pictures i've seen.  I did see a factory plugged hole on the dash.  Is that what it is for? and... the fuel bypass job? my fuel return line broke, so I figured on bypassing it, and the fuel bulb ( I'm guessing that it has a small restriction to push fuel to the preheat).  thanks for the reply

I think it is supposed to work off of the ignition switch, turn all the way clockwise, then release. Someone said you should hear a "poof" or see some smoke out of the muffler, but the one I think might work doesn't do that. It does seem to start easier if I click the switch a few times.

Hold the switch until you hear it ignite. It heats the fuel that is in it until it burns causing a small fire in manifold.   MACK
