I have a d17 that suddenly locked up with no warning. you could put in in reverse and go a few feet and then its just like you slammed on the brakes, put it forward and go a few feet, lock up etc. Took pans off of bull gears to see if any metal had falling in. One side had a few pieces of metal, very small, so I changed all the bearings and races. Put it back togeather and still the same. Jacked both rear wheels off ground so I could turn by hand and I had no problem turning wheels forward and backwards. Put tractor in different gears, still no problem turning by hand. Start up engine and put in gear a loud squelling sound and lock up, Put in reverse and a couple of minutes, lock up and vise versa. Even pulled tractor with truck with engine off and in gear, no problem. It has a lot of mechanics puzzled. Any ideas would be appreciated.

If you put transmission in any gear and PD in neutral and let foot clutch out, what happens then? MACK

Here is a probable cause.
The PTO gears in this diagram are located in a compartment directly behind the hydraulic reservoir. These PTO gears turn even when the PTO is not engaged and are driven via an intermediate shaft and gear down from the main clutch shaft. They constantly turn when the main clutch is engaged and have been known to get damaged if tractor is used for heavy and ABRUPT brush hog use. An inspection of these gears can be made by removing the small oil pan aft of the hydraulic reservoir. Oil must be drained in both HYD and PD compartments prior to removal. ![]() Edited by Macon Rounds - 15 Nov 2016 at 10:08pm |

Here is a diagram of the intermediate shaft and gears, also the main clutch shaft and gears.

Ditto There is a small spring that when in breaks will allows the brake to go to full lockup, it holds the brake disc together |

Just a thought because I'm not familiar with a D17, if it was the PTO gear, wouldn't it lock up or labor the engine regardless of the transmission? Seems like since it only happens when it's driving forward or backwards it's somewhere in the transmission or after, breaks would be after transmission also.

I agree. The brake issue is the most probable cause with the series 3 and 4's. However his initial comments did not indicate that just one side was locking up.
Sure wish this guy would chime back in. Need a little more info from him. |

Yep. further confirms the brake issue. Same as when he had it jacked and turned the wheel freely. When the wheels drive the brake it drives the balls off the ramp. when the axles drive the brake it tends to drive the balls up the ramp.

I hope you guys are still checking this post.... my series 4, 17 diesel did the same thing last night plowing my driveway. Please, any HELP.... mine was left side only, locks up both ways, happened on an uphill, could put it in a forward gear and hold right brake and it would "unlock" for a few feet then lock back up, after about 100 times doing that I got it 200' out of the driveway. Also witch is driving me even more crazy, the hydrolics are slow when it's locked up 3 point and loader. Please help, I'm stranded at 8,000ft and 6' of snow!

Sorry, also, this was doing this occasionally in reverse only, leading up to this, as soon as I put it in a forward gear it was fine, also the small spring on the front of the axle is there, is hooked up and has tension on it. Any help would be appreciated

Marble, I'm not an expert, but sounds like it could be a brake issue again. Probably something came apart and is hanging up

If you had both wheels off the ground with it in gear running and it locked up its NOT brakes if one brake locked up pinion gear would just transfer power to the other wheel causing it to get faster if off the ground it dosent lock up slowly apply one brake at a time until one locks up and won't release. Buy the way do all these test setting in the seat with foot on clutch for safety and nobody in front or back of the tractor hope this helps

Bradley, I have not had both wheels off the ground, but when the left side locked up, all power was to the right side. If/when the snow and Ice is gone, I'll get it towed UP to my house and test more.
