I've got a Ser II D17.  Ran just fine until I ran it out of gas.  Left the ignition on by mistake so the battery drained.  Was a 3 year old battery with a bad cell so it wouldn't charge, so I replaced it.  Couldn't get the tractor to start with a new battery.  Pulled a plug and turned the engine over, realized I had no spark.  Traced it back, I thought the coil had gone bad even though it was less than 2 years old.  Had one sitting on the shelf but forgot that it was a 6V coil for the WD, but it started and ran for about 10 minutes when I swapped it in.  Bought a new 12v coil, it started and ran for about 30 seconds then shut down.  Can't get it started again, have no spark at the plug.

Any ideas?

TIA.

Sounds like you burned out the points, points don't like to have the key left on without the tractor running.  I would replace the points and condenser, you can look at the points, and try to file them first, but that's where I would start.  Is the 12V coil internal or external resistored?  Unless you have a big porcelain resistor mounted on the tractor, you will need an internal resistor coil, and it should be right around 3 ohms measured between the pos. and neg. terminals, otherwise you will have more points troubles.

Also make sure the Ignition switch isn't toast also. Those switches that were used were borderline for the load the electrical system carried, so it might have toasted the switch. On the "D" series electrical system, its usually a YELLOW wire that runs to the Ignition coil. Turn the key in the ON position and with a test light check for power at the Ignition terminal.

I had the same thing happen with my series II.  Although the dealer said it was the deadest battery he had ever witnessed a new battery only fixed the situation.  I agree with what is said here, change points as well and see it that does it.  Good Luck!
