I recently had the head rebuilt and installed it myself. I have the valve spec's as .019 Ex and .010 In "hot". My problem is I am making the adjustment rotating the crankshaft while watching the push rod come all the way down (valve closed) rotating slightly further, then adjusting that valve. I have gone through this process a couple of time, but still know that I don't have the lash set correctly. Symtoms are running rough, excessive black smoke, backfire at high idle. History, new cylinder kits and injectors. Can anyone tell me how or where to find valve lash setting proceedure? Thanks!

If I remember correctly, you are supposed to bring a different cylider into TDC, before adjusting the valves you are working on.  While your approach should be fine, the you may still be in the cam curve, and just not know it.  For example to adjust valves on #1 cyl., then #2 has to be TDC, but I don't remember is which cly, for which set of valves.

According to my copy of the original A-C shop manual all it says is to adjust both intake and exhaust to .015 hot. There are no special instructions given.
What all have you done to this engine? Have you had the timing cover off? Done a compression test?

Turn the engine over and watch the valves. When the exhaust valve just starts to open, adjust the intake valve. When the intake valve just closes, adjust the exhaust valve. Works for any 4 stroke engine. This has been my stand bye anytime i don't have a specific sequence
