Does anyone have a photo of the draw bar. I am working on my brothers 14 and would like to make sure the draw bar is assembled with the correct parts. Is it suposed to have the ability to slide in and out or side to side? Or both. Is there a strap on top of the dbar and one underneither? A pic of a period correct assemble would be a great help. Oh in case of production changes this is a 1957 model 14.
Thanks Darrell

Darrell's setup is what I use. One can insert large bolts (I use 5/8" with a 3/4" nut under the head) in the outer holes and omit the top strap to obtain a swinging drawbar.

The first D14 drawbar bail was narrow. It came back straight, then angled down after the pins.
The first D17's were narrow also.
Neither were good when using the swinging drawbar; wider is better.

Thanks fellas.
I need to fab up the long strap. I think I have the small strap. I am glad I asked as I thought the small one went underneath of the draw bar swing plate peice. And mine is the narrow one . Hope we never need to use it, but would like it to function as designed just in case. |

That photo is an aftermarket drawbar support like we sell. It's actually the D15 Series II or the D17 Series III. D14's never had the wide support unless it failed, and the dealer sold the later style. They are however interchangable.

Sorry to disagree with you Jim, but the D14's from the first black bar grill tractors had the same drawbar guide as the D15s and also the D17s through the series III's, check your part numbers and you will be able to confirm it. Thanks Rich

Come to think of it, one of the last tractors we sold in 1962 was a D-14 with a Shuttle Clutch. It had the wide draw bar. One of our customers was very interested in a D-17 we had on the lot and wanted the wide draw bar. I think we moved the draw bar from the industrial type tractor to the D-17 to accommodate the request.
Good Luck! Bill Long |

I checked the online pars manual, and dont see that wide support for any of the D14's. Only the narrows as the D14, D15 (series I), and D17 (series prior to III). There is a "heavy duty" support, but it's a little different.
I understood that ONLY the D15 II and the D17 III came with that drawbar support. I've seen earlier D17's and a couple of D15's that had it, but it was added later, usually when the original broke.
But just as Chad's image shows, only the narrow is what I see was available for the D14 throughout production.

Well, to this old man's eyes, I see a lot of difference between WIDE and NARROW, kinda similar to apples and oranges.....

Take a look at the parts numbers in the D14 Parts catalog (use a late to include serials 19001 & up) and compare with the numbers D15 and D17 books. They just didn't add an additional page with the updated drawing. #4 in the picture carries 2 different parts depending on serials. The wide drawbar guide was used when they changed a number of features and to the Black Bar grill on the D14 effective at SN 19001. Even some of the black bar sales literature shows this.

OK, I don't want to cause any trouble here but these are the facts. This information is first documented in a small supplement D-40-S1 dated September 1959, put out before the new updated parts book dated October 1961. If you do not have this later catalog then you will not find it. This information relates only to the D14's after 19001, and engine serial 149-19070. Before these numbers the drawbar guide is number 230600, after 19001 the number is 232074 which is the same number as is listed for the D15's and the D17 I, II, and III. Series IV is different. The heavy duty drawbar guide is 232062, which is an all together different animal. There were many small changes that mostly go unnoticed at this serial number break, some of which are different camshaft part no. We all know about the different flywheel ring gear, the change to 12 volts as has been discussed before. The air cleaner cup is deeper, the battery trays are different, The power take off shift lever is longer, The side sheets under the fuel tank have different part numbers, The radiator shell and grille are different as to how the grille attaches, wing nuts as opposed to the tabs, Steering wheel and shaft are different, Power director lever is different, the roll shift front axle was changed to bolts instead of studs where the knees slide into the center section, which makes different numbers on these too. I know I have not mentioned them all here, but I know I am right on the drawbar guide.

Then I have learned something! Always willing to learn. I had never seen a D14 with that support (unless the owner told me they changed it) and the agco parts book didn't show it unless I just overlooked it.
It's good to learn. Means I'm still alive.
Thanks!

Iteresting -- I learned also - now I want to go out and check my serial number out of curiousity -- mine has the narrow set up that JimD is talking about. My D17D has the wide one - like to see if they are interchangeable.
