recently purchased a d14, the brakes had no pedal travel and I had to put all my fat into them to try and stop the tractor. I found the parking brake lever was broke and had applied the parking brake, ground and welded it, now I have travel in the pedal, but still the pedal is like a rock and I have to stand on them to get the tractor to stop. I have no Idea how long the parking brake was on and the tractor sat for about a year. all I did was run it on and off a trailer and up my drive way. the brakes don't grab like it's metal on metal and the tractor moves fine and there is no hot smell of the brakes being stuck on, so I'm guessing the axle seals are bad and my brakes are saturated in oil. I really hope I'm wrong so I don't have to rip the machine apart. the rods that control the brakes moves in and out and all linkage seems to work as it should. I'm hoping there is a magic button some place on the machine that I forgot to push that will make this issue go away. but not likely. thanks for all the help dt.

sorry to be the bearer of bad news but ,um, welcome to the club......3 out of 4 of my D-14s are that way. 1 had a left brake, one the right, one ...none...
Now if you want to 'practise' tearing a D-14 apart, I've got a garage and 3 you can 'learn' on..... Hopefully someone will post what 'common' seal number it is, I recall you can put two in the same hole as the original. Stuff I think you need to know... 1) drain the final drive( it'll be full of diff oil......) 2) check hydraulic pump oil, if low more fun.. that means rockshaft hose/ram is leaking, oil goes into diff.....I got 8 gallons out of one last fall....4 is normal ? BTW if you need a new ram hose, have a shop make one with a swivel end on it! AGCO doesn't have swivel end...PITA to install... Jay |

I did my d14 and I didn't need to drain the differential. The brakes are very easy to install

Don't you have a drain hole under the brakes? or is it not like the earlier tractors?

@#$#@!!!!!!!!! I was hoping it was some thing simple. never had to work on a d series, but I guess I'll have the chance. I've always wanted a d series, I never said I wanted to work on one though....
, heck the machine drew blood just checking the power steering fluid. loader frame is in the way to turn the wrench. wrench slipped off and ring finger hit the metal the grill attaches to....no feelings in my hands from spinal issues so it didn't hurt, but my natural instincts kicked in, wrenches flew and I started the 4 letter serenade.

Before I tore into to it I'd be working the brakes back and forth pretty hard to try and loosen them up as they may just be stuck up some from sitting.

good tip, I'll try working the brakes for a bit and see if that helps, sure is nice having a tractor that the engine hold you back and this is the first tractor with real power steering. my wd 45 had a cobbled up mess for power steering that didn't work worth a crap!!!

there is an adjustment nut on the brake rods , see if it will move to tighten the brakes it will need to come out to do them any way .

ran it up and down the drive way and it seems to be getting better, it'll at least stop on the hill now. I'll keep trying and see if it gets better. pretty sure I gotta have the 12V generator rebuilt, not getting volts out of the genny.
