Charles, did you get the float in that you pm'ed me on. I was wondering if you did and how it looked and is gonna fit up.
If all is a go I am going to order one.

Dave(Ma) ordered one and said he would let me know how it works. I don't have a use for one I just knew they existed and thought it would be nice if they will work on the D series. Macs also has coated cork for $1.50 each.

Charlie, Charlie - NOW ya tell me about the $1.50 solution!!! LOL I'm waitin' on the UPS guy - will provide measurements and fit assessment once it arrives and I'm back in the game. I have some surgery this Friday and won't be doing anything too strenuous for several weeks. But will be able to provide the dimensions shortly.

I've used a large cork from the hardware store coated with SealAll on my MF-135 gas gauge for several years. Seems to work OK. Probably cost a buck plus the SealAll but that may survive to do many floats.

I will be waiting for an update when Dave's (MA) arrives. Just looking at the pictures it looks like those ford floats will slip right on the rod. I saw the 1.50 one also.
the 1.50 one wold probably get eme to the big tractor barn in the sky but you know how it is when it comes to old tractors.
good luck on the surgery there Dave. You remeinded me of my hernia repair in the middle of spring time. I had to put the wife on the Z turn mower for a while. She really did good. However i noticed the neighbors property marker was knocked down and had red paint on it an one of the cedar bushes is not as wide as it used to be.

USPS delivered the float from Mac's Anitque Auto Parts yesterday. SKU appears to be A9312FLM. It's made of neoprene and measures slightly under 1.25" in diameter and about 1.375" in length. It's center-bored with what looks to be about a 3/32" diameter hole the length of the float. Will it work????? Now THAT'S a fine question, one that will have to wait until my body is sufficiently recovered from disc surgery (Friday) to be climbing up onto the D14 to do "surgery" on it! Will let you know when I know.

The original float is 1 1/2" long
by 1 1/4" diameter, so it sounds like that will make a pretty close match in size.

Just pulled the gas gauge assembly out of a D17 here. It would read erratic high low and who knows what wnen. Found the float arm would swing around in its holder. Pinched the holder and resoldered it and stuck the old cork float and assembly back in. Works like it should now. Cork didn't look that great, next time If it needs a float, I know wwhere to find one.

I was in a similar predicament about mid-winter... not only did the gauge not function properly, the gauge gasket leaked... so I drained it down, pulled the works, and found that the cork was more shellac than cork. Just happened that I had an early '90's Suburban fuel tank feeding my backup generators, it had a fuel pump pickup/float assembly that I'd removed and replaced with a for-purpose filler/pickup setup... so I had a perfect opportunity right there. Worked slick, and in classic form, it came to me at my-favorite-price.

Hi guys - sounds favorable - will know for sure in a few weeks when the doc okays me to pick up a tool. Right now I am restricted to lifting < 5 lbs and NO twisting or strenuous effort.

I just replaced my D-14's float this week.Getting the bottom tank mounting bolts out was fun...
Used 1/2 the float from a Cavalier gastank pump assembly( other 1/2 is in first D-14 !).
Had to remove tank from tractor to gain access to the slotted screws that hold the gauge in.
Not having a fat,big slot screwdriver I used the bit from one of those hammer type impact sets,mates with 3/8 socket. Used very little torque but...
Be really, REALLY patient when getting them out ! I got 3 OK, 4th one,upper left snapped off.Arrrrghhhhh.....
Had to drill out and retap the hole... grind off a new 1/4-28 tap or buy a bottoming tap, hole's less than 1/2" deep.Not a super tight fit, but OK for now.Winter project will be to fill the hold with JB Weld and do it again....
Hope my misery will make your task easier.

Ouch! Sorry that your project went awry. I have had mine apart before - about a year ago. Hopefully those screws will come out easily this time.

The only negative about ordering the part is the add-on charges! The part costs < $5 but the shipping and "< $20 order" charges added another $15 or so. IF there's a big demand, I could order a bunch and reship them at cost.

All right! I have finally been able to install the synthetic material float that I ordered from MAC's Antique Auto Parts. Here are some pictures to document the results:
Gauge Reading - Old Float
As you can see, it reads flat empty.
Now, here is the float installed on the gauge rod:
And, finally, the gauge reading with the new float installed:
Reads slightly over 3/4 - about right based on a ruler dipped in the tank. Now - the key question is whether the synthetic material will hold up. I will report back.... stay tuned!

I figured it would work OK but I didn't realize Mac's had a $20 minimum order. Call OLD STANDARD AUTO PARTS at 866-654-2855 ask for the synthetic model A gas tank float, and tell them
Charlie sent ya.
That float is listed at $4.00 and they will ship flat rate, whatever that is.

Mac's doesn't have a minimum $20 order. BUT they add $2 if your order is < $20. Part cost $4.65, then they add $6.95 for shipping and handling. So total is $13.60. I called Old Standard Auto Parts - shipping + part is $7-8.
