Stumped, wiring in a garbage disposal. Previous owner removed it. The wall switch is there but no wiring.
Was going to tap into the outlet for the dishwasher, installed new outlet, removed the tab on the hot side between the two outlets. Ran wiring up to the old switch, taped in to hot wire, connected switch, back down to the outlet, connecting to the screw on the other side of the removed tab. Turned breaker back on, flipped switch to test disposal, and nothing.
Plugged a floor lamp into the plug for dishwasher, and light turns on. Flip switch for disposal, plug lamp into that and nothing.
Got my multi tester, at switch, nothing when connect hot to ground.
Use multi tester in outlet for dishwasher, and sparks fly, plug in lamp and lamp works fine.
I unhook outlet, put black test probe on common wire, and red probe on hot wire and sparks fly
Where did I go wrong. I left the tab intact on the common side of the outlet.

Black to Brass, White to Chrome, simple rule. Are you trying to connect the hot to the N Side?
easiest to run a Romex wire pair from the Brass screw with a White under the feeder black then connect that to the input side of switch, connect the Black in that Romex to output of switch then down to the other brass screw.

White on silver terminals, black wire on the brass terminals.
What is weird is a lamp plugged to the outlet and turned will work, put test probes in outlet and sparks fly.

you removed the terminal between the two BRASS SCREWS.. both sides are HOT, or connected to BLACK WIRE....
What you need is a series circuit... BLACK wire off he BRASS SCREW... run to the switch one side.. other side of switch to disposal INLET ... outlet wire of disposal back to the plug and connect to the WHITE side ( silver serews).

Really you need to run a separate feed to the garbarator unit. They draw close to 12 amps.bet maybe a tad more,especially when 'stalled'..... dishwasher will draw that as well with heater on ,maybe 14 so both units on...BAM... breaker WILL blow. Up here code says they have to be separate feeds
when I redid my kitchen ,it used up 21 of the 24 circuits in the pony panel...never ever had a breaker blow in 20 years...

Lars, i reread your post and i think you are trying to make the BOTTOM of the OUTLET hot ( washer) and the TOP of the OUTLET SWITCHED for the disposal... You would need to come off the HOT WIRE ( black / washer side) and run to the switch, then back to the upper side of the OUTLET that you want to turn ON- OFF( this might be your WHITE WIRE - shown in red).... and yes, your TAB between the two BRASS side of the outlet would be removed.. Then you plug your disposal into the TOP of the OUTLET and it should be switched on and off... If your light works, it should be OK. ..... If it looks like this and the disposal dont work, then it may be broke.
like JAY said, dont use both appliances at the same time.

I did as Steve’s 2nd diagram. I agree with Jay on the separate circuits. Unfortunately currently the fridge, gas stove, and dishwasher on this same circuit. I will pull the panel cover tomorrow, and check to see if there is some piggy-backing of breakers. There a are a few empty spaces(breakers removed leaving a hole) on the panel.

Disposal is a very intermittent load. A 20 amp breaker will hold over 30 for several seconds at least, it doesn’t just trip at 20.1.

Update: replaced the switch with new one, and everything’s working as desired.
Checked breaker box, no piggy-backs, at least not in the breaker box, further down line I don’t know about.
House is on pier-and-beam, so this winter will be good time to drop a dedicated refrigerator line down over then up to the breaker box.
