The wife went to the local Costco tonight for a few items. The bottled water inventory was down to 14 - 36 count packages for one thing, but the eye opener was the packages of chicken breasts/tenderloins Cry , She was paying $ 16/package 3 weeks ago, tonight the same package is $ 26 ConfusedOuch !! Please tell me that the producer is getting a cut of the increase Smile !!

My son works for the largest poultry producer in the US. They are not getting any increase for their birds. They are having trouble making payroll. Cost of #2 diesel, cost of new tires for the trucks, cost of new parts must be causing the increase. Wonder why oil prices are going up and up daily.

Cosco has their own chicken prosessing plant in Fremont NE, they have several growers contracted to supply the birds to the plant.

A couple weeks ago, the local grocery store in town(the Shoppin Basket) had 10lbs bags of frozen legs/thighs for .29 cents per lb. I bought 2 bags.
I tried to follow the science, but it was not there. I then followed the money, and that’s where I found the science.

If I had to guess I would say it's the accumulation of the recent inflation plus the "labor shortage" due to covid. I was told a while back that the plant we sell to was able to run at about 60% because nobody wants to work. They can make better money at home. Also the increased fuel prices make the birds more expensive to move and the feed more expensive to haul. That's my $0.02 anyway. We used to be able to buy chicken direct from the plant at a grower discount. Haven't been able to do that since the shut downs

Just to make a reasonable guess, I'd say thats between 2 and 3 million birds. Their live weight is around 8.5 lbs or so. By the time you process them I'd say you probably have 3 to 4 lbs in a whole bird
