Where did all the good nighttime AM stations go? I remember the good ones like WBAP 820, KOMA 1520, KVOO 1170, there was one out of Shreveport, I jus remember the frequency was 870..they all played good music,, now all I find is talk or sports...
I guess satellite radio done away with night time AM radio... |

You don't find many, if any, Clear Station AM transmitters anymore. That good nighttime music from 500 miles away is a thing of the past. I've found that most AM radio now consists of special interest and nich programming.

The last good AM one here (CKOC... 'oldies') went 24hr sports talk...YUK !
Nothing on FM until about a year ago, then founf ONE that plays 'oldies', well some anyway. I gave up, put a few hundred MPs on a donor laptop, put 2 F150 speakers in a box( base for laptop) and tossed in garage. NOW I have nonstop GOOD music that I like to hear. Total cost, zip, zero, zilch, nada... Not in the truck for for drives,so don't turn the radio on. Also the 'drivers' up here are TERRIBLE. I'm impressed there aren't fender benders every hour ! Jay |

What's the difference, there hasn't been any good music since the 80s. I don't believe there is any current Rock groups. The music I listened to when I was a teenager is what I still listen to. The people in the groups I used to like are in their 60s, 70s, or dead.

Gee! I remember the one just across the border, don't recall call letters.
They shook the whole mid country plus KAAY Little Rock Chicago, WLS ? XM does a good job now except on north sides of hills and bluffs where sun doesn't shine |

Good music on the radio is hard to find. I listen to southern gospel and the old country, or some of the oldies from my younger days; can't stand any of the new stuff. Back in the day I used to listen to WCKY (Cincinnati, OH); WSM (Nashville, TN); WLS (Chicago, IL); WWL (New Orleans, LA) and WGUN "Big Gun in Dixie" out of Atlanta during the day. Amazing I can remember that far back. Now it's WSBfm (Atlanta) talk radio or searching for a good Christian station; WCON (Cornelia, GA) plays crap most of the time but from 5-7pm has gospel. I keep a handful of gospel cd's in my truck for long trips.

We still have good AM stations here in Montana, but the range isn't what it used to be. The ones I listen to are all classic country, and they always have the Ag market reports throughout the day as well.

JoeO brought back some memories. I was going to post about them two stations but couldn’t remember Little Rocks call letters. Our local station in Mexico MO use to play country music on AM. I bought a new Chevy pickup in 1978 that only had a AM radio. Right after I bought it they switched their country music to FM that is how my luck goes

KQAQ 970 out of Austin MN isn't too bad. They play some oldie country songs and on Sunday morning they had been playing country gospel but they seem to be moving towards contemporary lately and lost me on Sunday.
KDHL 920 out of Faribault MN use to play oompah music (maybe still do). Had an uncle that just loved that oompah stuff. I avoid it but when 920 isn't playing oompah it plays good old country or they did. I haven't checked them out in a while........ if I remember right they started playing that mexican crap music...... or that could have been another local station that started play that crap. My dial is either on 970 or Spring Valley MN FM KVCS 89.1 Christian station or Kinship Radio 105.7 Christian though I don't listen to their modern contemporary Christian music but the rest of the programming isn't bad. I wouldn't mind listening to some good old-time oompah music on a Sunday afternoon. Faribault AM is just a tad out of range for me. I don't think there are any 50,000 watt AM licenses in the US anymore. Several years ago I heard there was a 50 KW station in Mexico that aimed Christian programming toward the US. When I lived near Salem, Oregon the local AM stations were bought out by La Pantera, a Mexican outfit. Needless to say, I didn't habla. When I want to listen to music I connect to YouTube. It doesn't work when you're out in the field, but you can listen to whatever you want when at home.

WLS 890 Chicago
KMOX 1120 ST. Louis WSM Nashville Then there was one out of Cleveland around 1100 and one out of New Orleans that I used to listen to. About the only thing on AM at night is Coast to Coast am. If you like that kind of programming |

My folks used to drive up the hill above the house on the dairy after first cutting was off in a 73 LTD and listen to a station on the Texas/Mexico border and it was clear as a bell, we lived in upstate NY. Heard years later when I went west that it was a "bootleg" station someone started and placed it at or on the border due to govt. regulations but they had massive power on that transmitter.
Do not recall the name of it.

The station that was on the border was called the BIG 600..yea, it came in really clear after sundown. I can't recall the call letters...they would say Clint TX, but as powerful as it was, I think the transmitter was actually across the border
Yea, these are the ones I remember from the late 70's and early 80's I mostly listened to WBAP, Bill Mac show,, for the rock an roll it was KOMA...an Cal..I didn't have a FM radio til sometime in '79 or '80 and there wasn't a lot of them around you could pick up very far out it town Edited by Michael V (NM) - 23 May 2018 at 9:07pm |

I listen to the Big 900KFAL most of the time from Fulton mo. Plays 70-90s country. Range isn’t that far. Im 25 miles away and it pops and cracks after dark. Reminds me of when I was a kid riding with dad in the 83 Ford.

Used to be you could drive across the country all night long with a clear channel station like WSM in Nashville, Seems like the FCC has changed the rules to have more stations with less power, The government can screw up anything they get their hands on.

KVOO 1170 out of tulsa used to be classic country, it was owned by Ole Mike and he owned that station, 1070 KFDI the Radio Ranch out of Wichita and KWKH out of Shreveport La the home of the Original Barn Dance before the Grand Ole Opry. I listen to 550 am KFRM farm radio out of Salina Kansas and 1070 am still plays classic country. I can get WSM 650 out of Nashville on good nights. I still listen to 90 percent am, but it seems more baseball games have gone to FM so I switch over sometimes. KLRD I think is the call letters 1080 out of Dallas I can still pick up and KOA 850 am out of Colorado. I miss the old am stations also. KFDI 1070 when it was the radio ranch at noon would play Paul Harvey and the it would play the "lone ranger" which was a segment of Jerry Clower. It was great. I would stop the tractor at noon and eat dinner and listen.

Our school bus had WLS Chicago playing every morning. We'd listen to Larry Lujack's "Animal Stories!" show with Tommy Edwards. https://airchexx.com/2013/12/19/morning-madness-larry-lujack-on-wls-am-fm-chicago-january-1984/ |

WHO Des Moines 1040 is still running 50 KW, like KMOX 1120 in St. Louis and there is a Waterloo IA station on 1540 running 50 KW.

KWMT is still on 540 at Fort Dodge. I don't know if they have changed power or antenna. Look for information at http://www.yourfortdodge.com now a part of alpha media with more than a dozen stations in Iowa.

Radio is slowly dying off due to technology. There aren't any stations that play music that I want to hear other than Hair Nation on satellite. To solve that problem, like Jay did is sign up for Spotify on the internet. It's free as long as you have an internet connection and are willing to put up with a couple commercials here and there. You can do a paid subscription and listen anywhere without an internet connection and commercials. The best part is you get to create your own play lists and when you get to the end of the list it will automatically start playing music based on what's in your lists.
