    Posted: 30 Jul 2012 at 10:34am
So I had to replace my shift lever this weekend and had a chance to inspect the gears.  One of the gears is chewed up pretty bad (third) and the reverse gear is also beaten up.

So my question is....What does it take to change these gears out.

I assume that the tractor has to be split but then what?
All previous comments said this was the best way to fix the gear jumping.

Is this something that can be done on the farm or does it have to go to a shop.

I am willing to do the rear down but transmissions I am not to sure about.

Any thoughts.

Thanks,  GHAcres

As stated, support tractor and start from rear. It's really not a complicated job assuming you have ability. Get that rear housing off, put it on a work platform that is at right height and pull it apart. Don't get crazy a nd start replacing all the bearings, etc unless they need it. Shift collars are most likely shot, replace them, seals, do brakes while it's apart. You can save some good $$$ doing it yourself.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  Is there something better than the IT manual that would have more information.

Just as you said you start at the back after you have the tractor split.  But it would be helpful with a few more pictures/ instructions.

Also, as stated on many posts, a contributing factor to the gear destruction is that the shifting forks were possibly not aligned initially.  The forks look good but have some wear.  should they be adjusted/modified after the new gear set is in place.

Thanks again for all the replies

I would recommend getting the actual service manual through an AGCO Dealer. We had an IT manual for our D-19 and it wasn't that great. Just my opinion though.

Now that I have seen the parts breakdown on AGCO.  The gear that is all beaten up is the Main Shaft Sliding gear which is where the shifting fork sits and the reverse gear where the reverse shifting fork sits.

Is the repair the same procedure, is there more gear damage on the counter shaft that I can't see (since this pops out of third gear).

Thanks,  GHAcres

I found reproductions of the 180 Operator, Parts, and Service manuals on EBAY, loose leaf 3 hole punched in binders for like $60-$70 for the set of 3.

TBran had good advise on this , the last snap ring has to fit very tight so there is no play in the gears on the shaft

Doug G, can you give me more info about TBran's comments.  I searched his posts and couldn't find anything about this situation.  Do you have a link.

Thanks to nsula_country. I found a service manual there on ebay for $26.  Thought I had all the manuals that were available already.

Thanks
