Did a little looking on the interwebs and says that people having all kinds of trouble, and lots of different brands of it. Anyone know about thistle? I have it in both 190's.

303 is the old basic, basic Tractor fluid developed by John Deere.. It is OK for old tractors from the 1940-50-60 era.. It is NOT a replacement for newer tractors that use oils like CASE HyTrans.. ......... it really has NO SPECs to it much beyond JD 303... im not sure if it meets ALLIS 821 spec.

What Is 303 Fluid Really?
The term 303 fluid stems from an old specification that John Deere used decades ago named JD-303. It was designed for tractors and similar equipment built between 1960 and 1974. It was made obsolete in 1974 when the use of whale oil, of which the specification was loosely based, was outlawed by the Endangered Species Act. Fast forward to today and the ‘yellow bucket’ as it is often referred to is still out there touting the old 303 spec and cost savings. JD-303 was replaced with J14 then again by J20-A which is also outdated. When John Deere updated J20-A to J20-C, things got a bit gray. The additive chemistry used to meet J20-A carried over to J20-C. The only change was a new test (oxidation and seal) was added to evaluate a tractor fluid’s ability to meet the Allison C-4 spec. In basic terms, no change or reformulation to the fluid…just a new test. ------------------------------------- The Petroleum Quality Institute of America conducted a study of 303 fluids purchased from store shelves at random in 2017/2018 in order to determine their performance levels. Their results were shocking to say the least:

The 303 SPEC was discontinued by JD in 1974... a couple companies continued to sell a bucket of oil with "303" written on the front of it... Cheaper than the "Premium Tractor Fluid" you normally get... Too many people bought this 303 to be installed in tractors built in 1980 -2000 that might have WET BRAKES, newer type HYDRAULIC pumps, combined steering, etc ................... 303 was make for tractors like the WD - B - C.

Made? Just had a discussion with an oil distributer, and he said there should be a class action lawsuit across the board for all the stuff labeled 303.
Said it is the end product from flushing the pipelines and contains solvents in it. Not good for any tractor or machine today. Told him back in the early 70's, DX had 303 oil and we used it in our 170 for several years until the gasman sold his business and then we got farmland co-op that brought in their gas and oils... about 10 years back I seen the 303 labeled oil in the 'yellow buckets' at Tractor Supply and bought 15 pails, thinking it was the same stuff we had gotten from DX... it wasn't. Cold weather came and the 170 became hard to start and then the oil pump started having issues of peeing out the end cap seal and looked like syrup when checking it cold. Didn't help that we were in the negative 20's for several weeks... Got tired of the crap and drained the 170 and the loader cylinders and took off the sump and cleaned that and the screen which was clogged with stuff that looked like white fat. drained it as good as I could and put in the Farm and Fleet brand trans hydraulic fluid. Tractor started a whole lot better, and the pump quit leaking out of the end cover seal. I used the oil up in the D17 and other tractors that didn't get started in the winter. Never buying that yellow can crap again.

A settlement has been reached in a class action lawsuit that alleges the following “303 Tractor Hydraulic Fluid Products”—CITGO-manufactured MileMaster 303 Tractor Hydraulic Fluid; CITGO-manufactured H-K 303 Tractor Transmission Hydraulic Fluid; Orscheln Premium 303 Tractor Hydraulic & Transmission Fluid; and/or CITGO-manufactured SuperTech 303 Tractor Hydraulic Oil—did not meet the equipment manufacturer specifications stated on the label. The Defendants deny they did anything wrong and state further that the labels were truthful and adequate. The Court has not decided who is right. Instead, the parties agreed to a proposed settlement to avoid the expense and risks of continuing the lawsuit.
You are a Settlement Class Member if you have purchased, not for resale, one of the following products sold in the United States during the stated Class Period:
The settlement establishes a $18,825,000.00 “Class Settlement Fund” that will be paid to Settlement Class Members as: (1) cash awards of up to 100% of the purchase price paid for the 303 Tractor Hydraulic Fluid Products and (2) reimbursement for the costs of any repairs, parts, and specific equipment damage that a Settlement Class Member claims resulted from, in whole or in part, the use of the 303 Tractor Hydraulic Fluid Products during the Class Period. You may need to submit a Claim Form to receive your award, which can be obtained in the |

If I remember correct from the IH oil meetings I attended years ago, 303 is just hydraulic oil. Good for hydraulic systems only. No gear wear capability like a trans/draulic oil such as Hytran or Hy-gard. We had a customer bring in his 5488 years ago with a lot of transmission gear noise. He had bought a 55 gallon drum of hydraulic oil cheap at Sam's club. He ended up with a very expensive trans rebuild.

My check came from oriely auto parts. I have a charge account there. I had zero knowledge of this lawsuit until the check came in the mail last week. I've also bought the TSC brand 303 when they were out at oriely. Wish I'd known all this a little earlier.
