So could tractors like the 7000/8000 series be ordered from the factory with different type of duals? i.e. clamp-on, cast, hub, mexican hat etc. or were those mostly "dealer installed" ? I assumed that Cast style were more factory ?

Clamp ons were usually dealer provided aftermarket. Mex hats and cast were always selected from nearly a page long list of options. Of course there were 2 or 3 different lengths and sizes of axles that had to be spec'd as well. At times with or w/o tires.

When my Dad and uncle were in business (mid-60's to late '70's), I never remember seeing a new tractor come from West Allis with duals. Duals were always added at the dealership. As I recall, most were clamp-on duals. I don't remember any axle duals but there may have been a few.

Duals were dealer installed, not factory installed. Clamp on duals were provided by the aftermarket. Flower pots and Mexican hats are informal names for the cast centers that factory duals had.

I think 7580's had a "clamp-on" factory ordered dual wheel. Seems like they had some sort of interlock notch on the dual wheel band to engage with the inner rim so it could never spin. A fancy set of clamp-on's for lower cost and in the case of a 7580, something not so heavy, as the tractor was heavy enough as it was.

Thanks guys, I always kind of wondered about that. I am debating what to out on my 8070. It current has clamp-on, but the tires are shot. I put hub duals with pressed wheels on my 210 years ago, and like that set-up, but was considering the more original cast set-up for the 8070.

I just watched a youtube on Allis brochures for black belly 70xx series, all showed the cast center with the spin out wheel.
https://youtu.be/U2KXUqCJKic?si=CLrwWF2k4p7EFyUb Also watched a J and L video a couple days ago also showing the cast center with spin out wheel. https://youtu.be/hJw9kVu9shk?si=hYaEDLQbZqMpjzuS I'm not saying that is what came from the factory, just what I have seen in promotional material. Ted |
