I have a late 54 Wd 45 . It pops out of first gear. I am sure that my snow plowing going from first to reverse did the damage with gear grinding. Taking off the shifter I saw that the first /second slider had work teeth on the side facing the differential which is the way the gear slides going into first, so I thought that was the trouble. However looking at the AGCO exploded parts view, now I am not sure about that. Maybe it is the gear 14 which is the splined collar and its companion. Who can help me with this ?

#15 is a gear with couplers built onto it is what engages 1st.  the teeth on 1st are worn or the splines on the diff side of #15 are worn or you have a shift fork travel/detent issue.

Thank you. I can see that you have a working knowledge here. I have a hard time following. So what gears do you think I need to order ? Both 14 and 15 or also 7 & 8 ?

Can anyone tell me whether the gears on the main shaft can be replaced by disconnecting the torque tube from the transmission and pulling them out off the pinion shaft thru that opening. Or is it really necessary to take out the differential and go at it that way. I am leery about doing a gear replacement through the back end. At the same time can gear #7 on the countershaft be replaced by using the torque tube opening.

No and No.  Both axles have to be removed, as does the differential. A split at the battery box is required. Top mainshaft goes out the back after the differential is removed. You will be down to a bare case to remove the lower countershaft, if that's what you want to do.

There should be a lot of good used transmissions for WD45's around. It would probably be a lot cheaper (and easier) than repairing yours.
