I have to replace 2 ceiling fans one of these days. Been running non stop for the last 20 some years. One just stopped working very good. Both wired to the same switch so I just shut them off.
Bout 22 feet off the floor. Ain't quite figured out how I'm going to pull that off.
From my vantage point they look expensive.

I'm with DIYDave on buying a new fan.. The GREAT thing about the remote ones are SIMPLE wiring. Just need blk-wht and toy get fan AND light control ! Mine's about 15-20 years old , HD unit(Hampton Bay ??), 3 speed and variable dimming. direction is pullcord though. Never use it, always pushing air to the ground...summer or winter. yeah I _could_ modify that operation for $5....
If you're like me ,ladder time ain't fun time, especially with bifocals and itty bittty parts inside a moving object.....

bypass the switches, wire direct, and use the light switch for on off?

In the long run, might be better to upgrade to a new fan, that has a remote, to control it.  Them chains is always a breakin, around here...Wink

there are several versions of 3 speed fans...
the ones I deal with ( 20" box ones) have all been the same

power( black) from wall goes to switch then 3 wires (low-med-hi) go to 3 windings on the fan motor. There IS a capacitor as well..it's called the 'run ' capacitor. Needed to make sure the fan actually spins.
The neutral (white) wire of the power goes to the common of all 3 motor windings.

what you never ever want to do is change DIRECTION when the fan is RUNNING...bad things can happen then...

with the switch removed, connect BLACK to either the green , brown, or grey and ONE SPEED should work with the power turned back on.

the little black box is not really a capacitor. It is more like the resistor box on an auto blower motor circuit ....... there are 2-3 resistors inside that change the speed of the motor depending on which one of the 3 wires from the "speed switch" is energized.. I think you can find the common wire on the switch and connect to one of the "speed" wires and bypass the switch... If the fan then runs, the BLACK BOX is working... you can actually check all three speeds by connecting ONE WIRE at a time to the COMMON on the switch, bypassing it.

Howdy,,,,Folks,,,,,OK,,now that we got the formalities out the way,,,,,,,lets get right to the subject,,Shall we,??Wink
I gots to replace the pull switches on both of the ceilin fans in den and kitchen,,,funny how they both went out days apart???,,,
Got one taken out and I kinda puzzled,, both fans are 3 speed.  This First pull switch has  4 wires and is wired to a square plastic box (capacitor?) that has 5 wires comin outa it. 3 of the wires from the square thingie go to the pull switch and other two go to the 115 from light on fan.  Clear as mud,,,???LOL
The pull switch fell apart when I took it out so I figure it was the culprit and hopefully the square box is OK,,,??? I have no clue how to "test" thet little box,,,,,anybody,,??
Got some new switches ordered as none to be fount in this little ole burg,,,,,Angry
