Found a loose bearing on the front axle of our CAT70. Went to tighten
the nut and found that someone has been into this before. The nut is
very loose on the shaft threads. Decided to pull the stub and see what
we can do...
Removed the 1" bolt and 5/8" bolt from the axle tube. Cleaned up all the
grime from around the stub shaft and from the slit in the bottom of the
axle tube. Knocked a couple of punches into the slit at the bottom of
the tube to try to spread it open a bit. Put a couple more chisels
between the axle stub shoulder and the axle tube.
Have been tapping on the axle tube and going at the axle stub shoulder with the air hammer to no avail.
Then cut a piece of tube to fit over the axle stub, a bit bigger than
the shoulder, to bear against the end of the axle tube. Made a plate for
the end and carefully threaded the axle nut back on. We have the nut
fairly snug but don't want to over do it because the threads aren't the
greatest (the whole reason for this operation!)
Any other ideas?

Grind the threads off, and re-thread next size smaller?

Hello. Not sure what to tell you, We have had a Cat 435 F sense 1973 however I have never had the need to take a front wheel apart yet!! It has spent most of it's time hooked to a Cat, D8-2U. Lately it has been only used at antique tractor shows. I hope you have as good of luck with your Cat 70 as we have with our 435-F! It has been a excellent piece of equipment! What will you pull your scraper with?, Do you have much work for it? Is your scraper still set up as a cable machine? Operating tractor scrapers was always one of my favorite things to do!! Ours has been converted to hydraulic. As with most scrapers around here, it is pulled with an ag tractor.

I was hoping to pull the stub shaft and throw it in the lathe to turn the section down and re-thread. Hadn't thought about trying to grind it while mounted....

Andrew, if you can do it, and if the axle stub has a center hole, and you can find the right sized hole saw, you can do it that way. The trick is in getting the die started straight, so the nut goes on exactly straight. Some times you just don't have the room...
