May be long winded. But here's the story. Have a WD 45 Diesel. Cousin had it for years. Did a lot of work on it. Looks good. It's back on my grandparents dairy farm where I grew up. They died several years ago. We live there now. Engine has been gone thru, rebuilt pump. Runs perfect. Problem is the starter wont engage onto the ring gear on the flywheel. Pulled the starter. The starter gear comes out all the way when I give it power. Starter gears look like new. Ring gear is not chewed up at all. I'm guessing the wrong ring rear was put on when it was apart. Maybe I'm missing something simple. Only have to tow it a couple feet to start it. So no big deal. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Mark a tooth and start rolling it over counting the teeth. Doubt it is that if it started before though. Does the over running clutch and everything spin free and snap back?

Everything spins out all the way and goes right back. It looks like the ring gear is below where the starter gear comes out. Need to measure inside there. Engine was rebuilt. Then put back in by a couple old farmers. Maybe they used a ring gear from a gas WD. No big deal to tow it. But still think I'm missing something simple.

The ring gear on the WD/WD45 gas tractors used the same gear as the WD45 Diesel tractors all had 100 tooth.

Same ring gear on a wd45d as a gas but in a different location if I understand correctly. I wanted to put a diesel starter on my gas and was told I would either have to move the ring gear or find a diesel one.
