I recently put a GM 1 wire alternator on my WD.  For some reason it won't start charging unless the tractor revs up past full throttle.  What needs to be done so that the alternator will charge as soon as it starts up?
Thanks

Change it over to a three wire. Most 1 wire Alternators need 1200-1400 rpms to excite the regulator to start the charging process. One wire Alts are not for Tractors. Depending on what regulator that was installed in the unit when built, some can be used both ways. I offer a wiring kit to change a one wire to a three wire system which includes a key switch. Or, if you want to change it over yourself give me a call, be happy to help ya out....

My understanding of the 1-wire alternators is that they get their "tickle" current internally and that this requires a fairly high revolution speed. Could put a smaller pulley on the alternator or change out to a traditional 3-wire set-up. My D14 behaves similarly but doesn't require revving to as high a rate as yours seems to. Some of the experts on here may be able to suggest some way to tweak the alternator to bring down the required speed.

Looks like Steve (the expert) and I were posting at the same time! What he said....though my 1-wire set-up works okay!

super simple cheap fix for you
go to your auto store and buy the exciter wire/diode,and plug it in to the 2 prong
outlet(it is rubber caped)on your alt
hook remaining wire to any switched wire, about 10.00 will work perfect
