A few years ago the mower deck for my 712S was wore out. The housing was just rusted out and beyond repair. At the dealership where I work a customer had ordered a new housing and never picked it up. I had been looking for a good used deck and didn't come up with anything worth while, so I decided to take all of the parts out of my old deck and put it in the new one. Well as I tore the deck apart I found that many of the parts were wore out. I had to replace two spindles, one spindle housing, one drive pulley, the center baffles, the inner roller shaft and rollers, the rear roller shaft and rollers and I gave it a coat of paint. I did not get a new discharge cover also I put the piece in the discharge housing back in, I know it is missing a piece but seems to work fine without it. I also installed a deck washer. The overall cost of parts ended up being twice what I was planning on and at the time it seemed crazy at the time but looking back on it now for what a new lawn mower costs it has paid for itself. Since I did this project Briggs & Stratton bought out Simplicity and a lot of the parts that were available at the time are starting to disappear. | Yea the rollers on these decks make a nice looking lawn. Nice job, i know what you mean on putting more in then you plan. but just think how long it has lasted and will last. Did you have to replace the center one, we have a lot of issues with that style center pully, have to keep an eye on it to make sure it stays tight. My dad takes a piece of plastic tubing an pounds it into the wore out rollers to get some more life out of them lol. |

Its amazing how some of these mower decks get so nasty looking over the years. You don't pay attention to it cause' its under the machine and ya only see each end of it, not the whole thing. That looks a lot like the 5' deck that I had on my 5020. I got a spindle and all the bearings and other parts I needed at a dealer that used to be an AC dealer. The way I cut my lawn, it wouldn't stay level and it looked like I had one inch terraces, so I switched back to the 6', 3 point mower. I'm guessing by the stickers, that those are actually brand new rollers? Would you mind measuring the OD and length on one? Are there 3 of one length, and 4 shorter ones? ------------- Current slow rides: '65 Big Ten, '79 JD 317 |

I did have some problems with that center spindle staying tight Mike, what I ended up doing is throwing the Simplicity lock nuts away and put a regular jam nut in its place, tightened it up real tight and also used a light duty thread locker. The Simplicity lock nuts were actually stripping the threads a bit and the pulley put enough stress on them that they would strip out. I will get some measurements of those rollers at work. We keep them on hand. Jim |

| That's a good idea. Have you ever mowed with the orange decks with the tin center pully. We kinda think that deck the blades spin faster, or it just seems the white decks sound like the blades are slower |

| I put the deck washer in after I took the pictures. You just have to drill the three holes out and bolt it in place. Works pretty good if you end up mowing a lot of wet grass. |
