Subject: Model B oil pan removal

| Removed all the bolts from the oil pan. Of course, nothing is a simple as it first appears. The pivot pin from the front axle assembly prevents me from dropping the pan. The pin has been welded in place. Is the pin normally welded in place? I don't see any other way to remove the pan without first removing the pivot pin. If I grind the weld and damage the pin, can I find a replacement for it? Any suggestions? |

| I've had the oil pan off both mine and I don't remember removing the pivot pin, but it has been a few months. |

| I've had mine off also.Theres a trick to it. I forget exzatly how ,theres a certain way u turn it.The hardess thing foe me was putting back the two bolts in the back. |

| We took our oil pan off. The pin is supposed to be welded in place. I don't think there's a way to do it without taking the front end off. |

| Thank you all for your replies. Dean was correct. I turned it every way but the right way. Once I turned the pan the right way, although a tight fit, I was able to slide it out. My faith in American engineering has been restored. |

The guy who asked the question and then figured out how to turn the pan to remove it, will you please explain how you turned it to remove it? Also, exactly how did you turn it to re-install the pan?

I don't think it is the way you turn it that is important as much as how you hold your mouth while turning it first one way and then the other.

| Its been awhile that I did this. Not really certain about this but here it goes. Hopefully you got all the bolts out. There is a couple in the back of the pan that are a real bugger to get out and put back in. The other problem with the pan is the pick up tube for the oil pump hangs down into the pan. At first this seemed to be a problem as I thought the pan would simply drop down or slide out the side, but the tube and other obstacles prevents that from happening. What I figured out is (and I can't recall if I rotated it clockwise or counter-clockwise) if I dropped the pan slightly as I rotated it and continually did so, the opposing corners of the pan will actually clear the obstacles that at first seemed to be in the way. Keep the pan horizontal as you drop and rotate it. Re-install it the same way. Getting the holes of the gasket to line up so you can put the back bolts in can be very frustrating as well. Make sure the kids aren't around as you are likely to say a few things that little ears shouldn't be exposed to. Let me know if this works. Wish I had written down the steps and posted them at the time so other could benefit. If this works or if you find another solution to it, please let us know how you accomplished it. |

I always glue the gasket to the pan first. I don't glue it to the block so I can drop it any time and put it back without using a new gasket. Dropping the pan down on the pivit bolt and rotating the pan front to the left side of the tractor as you rotate the back toward the right side works for me. If you have the pan that will do it. Years ago I loosened the nuts that hold the front end to the block and moved the front forward enough to get the pan to rotate. I was told it was not necessary if I did it correctly. The next one I did came out easy. I could not believe I could have had so much problems with the other one. Sooo I tried to drop the pan on the one that gave me the problem and it would not come out. Sooo I compared them with each other off the tractors and found one pan slightly larger. I was told I was nuts that they were all the same. Sooo out came the camera,

I did it this morning before work. Took all the bolts out, then, from the left side of the engine, I dropped the pan down 1/2 to 3/4" parallel to the mating surface and rotated it so the front went towards the right side and the back towards me on the left and it slipped right out, no problem. ------------- 1951 B |

| I use a light coat of silicone spread even with my finger. Several times after I had it clamped in place I let it set for a couple days. |
