Question on the traction booster operation on the WD-45. When does the traction booster kick in when it senses wheel slip or by certain felt increase in pull etc. Can someone please teach me how this kicks in. I know what it does just not what triggers it so to speak.

their is linkage that goes from above the bell to the pump it has a eye that can be threaded in and out on one end and is slotted on the other end someone will give you the correct answer on this for sure but I think you turn the threaded end in if it is not working and out if it works to much (hitch won't go down) I think their are other things to adjust on the pump too. it take alot to pull it but not sure on numbers ------------- 1938 B, 1945 B, 1941 IB, 1949 C, 2 1938 WCs, 3 1950 WDs, 1951 WD, 2 1955 WD45, 1957 D-14 |

| when the tractor begins to spin out and the rear end drops from spinning, the bell pushes the linkeage to the pump and the pump then raises the plow or impliment until the tractor will pull the plow.it actually just raises the impliment out of the ground automatically and lowers it as the tractor runs back up to beginning ground level. not really increasing traction, just pulling less load. hope this helps. |

| Adjustment can also be accomplished by adding, or in most cases removing washers that hold the clamp/retainer over the large spring that the PTO shaft runs through. There are two fine thread bolts with thin washers. As the hitch wears it becomes necessary to remove washers to maintain the right adjustment on the link to the pump. A former Allis dealer set my `56 WD45 with a 3 bottom plow that way prior to plow day last fall. Traction Booster works perfect, just the way I remember it. HTH |

| I have to disagree with Dannbob. Aproperly adjusted and set traction booster will not change the depth of an implement. By appling hydraulic pressure to the lift links, part of the weight of the implement is carried by the tractor on the rear wheels increasing traction. |

It's not politcally correct to say it changes the depth but it does.The force of the draft will compress the big spring and move the linkage to the pump causing it to start lifting.It will continue to lift till the load is reduced enough that the spring and linkage can move back to beginning position.It all depends how tough and how long the tough spot is on how much depth reduction actually occurs.I had to remove some washers on the big spring to keep my 4 bottom in the ground with the quadrant lever all the way down.

They were considered a 4 bottom plow tractor (for the literature that was passed out) back in its day, only thing is that was 4-14 and low gear. Light ground is a different story. Normal ground 2nd gear and 3-14 here. Seen many clay spots pull the front end off the ground and then you through some weight up front to keep her down. The plow in the pi looks like a 4-16 with the stearable tail wheel unlike the caster wheel version that was sold during the 45's production run. Think that plow came out when they started selling the D19's. Not for sure but thats about the time they started showing up in A-C's sales books. |

A properly set traction booster will not change depth. If it is unfit (greasy wet) then yes but it has to be so wet that the tractor won't pull the plow say 6 inches deep in the first place. BTDT. Works real good. I've seen the film on how it works. When set up and working correctly, nearly all of the implement weight can be transferred to the tractor without changing the depth.
