I there a special wrench to remove bolts holding starter on???

It is called a half moon wrench. If they used the 5/8 15/16" head bolts it will be a bear in any respect, if they used the 12 point 5/8 head space savers it will be easier.

Always take the worst to get at one out first, then the next worst then the easiest and return in reverse order. Most tool dealers do not have the larger sized 1/2 or quarter moon wrenches on the trucks as starters have evolved and locations evolved no longer requiring them. Try ebay or a local tool dealer. You may end up making one for yourself.

A neighbour has a 16DP, so I asked.

He says you need about 2 feet of extension for a socket that fits the bolts so you can get at them from the front.

Yes, long extension and socket will work, but socket will have to be removed before bolt is all the way out, or it will get stuck- starter is the same as HD11, I believe- 5/8" bolts- may have 12 point head.

Thanks Guys ! DMiller was right there is not enough room between bolt
head an starter body to get a socket on.

I cut down a cheap socket so that I could use a socket on an extension for my HD16m. Its come in handy for several other machines that use a similar starter and saved alot of time over using the half moon wrenches.

I do not have it anymore but I made a cheater wrench from a old thin wall socket and a curved length of 3/4 barstock, welded the barstock on the side of the socket and cut away the square drive essentially making my own 1/2 moon wrench but adapted for the specific use on these style starter bolts. Ended up bending it all sorts of kinked to get what I was really needing, came in handy until late in my career when it just became a unused tool and I gave it to a friend with a old IH road tractor and VT903 cummins.
