Hey fellas, I'm trying to help my buddy get his ca going he had the distributor off and now we need to time the tractor we can find the "F" on the flywheel but once we do that how do we set the distributor, and the rotor and what not I have a it manual and it doesn't make sense thanks for the help

I have an IT manual too and timed my CA by following the instructions therein.

What doesn't make sense to you?

When it says place distributor rotor bin position where metal strip of same is pointing toward batter lead terminal on distributor body. And when it says place distributor in mounting bracket and engaged the driving members? You can't run the gear wen it's in the mounting bracket that's turning te whole engine

Forget the flywheel marks till you have it running. Start by bringing number 1 cylinder up to TDC of the COMPRESSION stroke. Do this by holding your thumb over the plug hole( with the plug out) till you feel compression. Then bring to the top of the stroke. You can determine where the top is by putting a piece of wire in the plug hole and feeling when the piston stops moving.
Once on TDC of compression stroke on number 1, take the distributor cap off and see where the rotor is pointing. It must point to the number 1 plug wire. If it doesn't, you have 2 choices. switch the wires so they follow number 1 by firing order in a clockwise rotation, or pull the distributor, turn the rotor and replace it so it IS pointing at number 1. The book doesn't tell you to turn the rotor after you put the distributor in. It tells you to put the rotor in position and THEN install the distributor.

But I have done that and it just doesn't seem right? It ins rough and misses

With a distibutor on (any engine) you do get number one cylinder to TDC on the compression stroke. You drop the distributor down so the rotor points to your number one cap terminal so you have adjustment by rotating the distruibtor both ways. When dropping it down in the rotor will turn. It sometimes takes a couple of times to get the rotor to line up properly. Any distributor engine will start on TDC. If you use the TDC on the flywheel on the CA and you rotate the distributor back and forth after it is in the correct position then watching to see the points are just ready to open, when it is running it will be in time.

You can check it with a timing light and the fire line will be in the center of the flywheel inspection hole. That is just the way it works.

Don't forget, the firing order is 1 2 4 3, not the common modern 1 3 4 2. You also set the timing with the engine at full speed, not idle like you would for a car.

If it still runs poorly after timing it , it must be something else.
