checked the hydraulic/ trans fuid and found it to be thin and milky. is this normal or should i replace .i i dont no when fluids were changed if ever  . is there a proper fluid or will a generic brand do.  thanks

Yes definitely change it as it has water in it. Use universal hydraulic/transmission fluid. I buy mine at TSC

There are 3 separate 'oil compartments' sorta between your knees:
 
Front one is Hydraulic Reservoir - holds 10 qts.
Oil level dipstick on R/H side near Belt Pulley.
 
Power Director - 8 1/3 qts.
Approx 1 foot forward of Transmission Shifter and to the left.
Large threaded nut with dipstick attached.
 
Transmission - 14 1/2 qts.
Located near transmission.
 
I use Trans Hyd. in Hydraulic and Power Director.
I use #80 in Transmission.
