pleeeeez tell me these shifters should slide on the shafts!  they don't now, but when i take them out and manipulate the gears by hand i can get all 3 forward and reverse to work smoothly and easily.

the is the last obstacle on a rather complete functional restoration of the (expletive deleted) "ran till it broke" suburban 12 my neighbor gave me.  then i can finally get back to my true love - the CA.
i learned a lot in the process but this is my first venture into transmissions.
btw the left assembly is just laying there for demonstration.
sure hope this is the problem... or i'm stumped.

thanks as always to all for the truly helpful info you provide.

Don, I know nothing about the suburban 12 but either the shifters slide on the shafts or the shafts slide in their bores in the trany case.

thanks steve -
it looks like there is not enough "slide room" in the captive bores the shafts rotate in for the shifters to move the gears far enough.  i'm just a little tenuous about applying much force on parts i think should be freed up because of the risk of breakage... since replacement parts look to be virtually unavaiable.
so i'll wait a bit to see if more info comes forth, then use an short stroke impact hammer to see if it breaks loose.  started the pre-soak in TF/acetone last night.

i gotta get less timid.  a couple of mild bangs and the shifters broke loose.  a litle steel wool and they work perfectly now reassembled.  even cured the oil leak with new seals.
so at last the looooong diversion off my CA refurb is rapidly coming to an end.  whew.
