What gauge cable is used in a 6v system (CA) from the battery to the starter?

At least 2, preferable 0 or 00. Nothing smaller than 2.

For 6V, the norm is usually 1 gauge. But, this is one of the cases where bigger doesn't hurt. Some use welding cable which is a bit over the top, but it works. If the starter motor is in tip top shape as well as the Battery, the standard size should work fine.

Bigger in a battery to starter cable only hurts when its so big and stiff that it breaks off terminals on the starter or the battery post or can't be bent to fit. When you are drawing a couple hundred amps for a few seconds, its not wire heating that's the limit, especially at 6 volts its voltage drop.

Last time I needed battery cables NAPA had them in various gauges from wimpy to big enough for cranking an 800 cubic inch diesel in cold weather in various lengths without having to go to a custom cable.

I use welding cable (0 or better for long run) as the strands are small and extremely flexible. Having a large supply of cables from previous jobs makes it so I only need to find the ends , a good brass end-(cad plated at battery) with crimp ability and then solder to complete the bond.

Thanks, Steve.  BTW the wiring harness you did for my D17 three years ago was well worth the expense.

Thanks, I'll check with NAPA to see what they have in stock here.

You can probably get by with a Big Box Store special, but I wouldn't. Throw a little more money at the cable and know you have a good one. Stick with 6 volt sizing. BTW, the positive post connector should be slightly larger than the negative. There are one size fits all connectors, but the good ones are properly sized for the post.

Personally, I'd use the same thing as I did for 6v because...why not?  However, decent 2ga would work, probably even 4ga...but why?

for 12V, I use premade 4GA cables. The 'trick' is they're premade,so properly crimped and molded making them more reliable than anything you bodge.
for 6V, I use welding cable, like others said very fleible and can easily handle the amps !

How long is that cable?  I need one for my CA also.  The one on it is a cheapie but I can't measure it because it's up at the farm.
Thanks for the info.
