I recently aquired a 1946 2N Ford.The main reson i got it is It has the Sherman step-up step down transmission.I have always herd these things would run 30mph down the road but the most iam getting in high gear is
is about 17 mph.Is it because the 2N only has 3 foward gears where the 8N has 4 foward gears ? Or was what i have alwayes herd a bunch of bull ?

17 mph feels like 30 mph with the steering system of the 2N. It kicks hard when it hits clumps because its bevel gears, not worm gears.

Gerald , you sure said it . A 8N ford was the first tractor i ever owned when i was young and only had 20 acers . I did a lot of work with it and it served me well and it ran great.But more than once i nearly broke my wrist from that darn steering wheel cranking around on me when the front tires would catch on something . Boy did i fell like king of the world when i got my first Allis a D17. Since then i have aquired more land and lots of Allis tractors .This 2N is a neat little tractor and it fits my young son very well .We dont plan on working it much just maybe pulling a wagon every now and then and cruising around the farm.

Top speed for a Ford 2N with a Sherman step-up transmission is 18.12 Mph. Hope this helps.

The steering gear of the 8N is a ball worm. It kicks a lot less than the bevel gears on the 9N and 2N.
The 8N that I had also had the Sherman. A friend of mine drove it home while I followed with car and trailer full of implements. I'm recalling maybe 20 or 22 mph. It was not fast and I didn't drive it on the road much after that.
