Ok, question for the brain trust here. I just finished reinstalling the rebuilt engine in my WD45 and have been unable to get it timed correctly. I have a factory reprint of an AC WD45 service manual and an I&T manual, both are very vague on how to time the distributor. Can someone explain step by step how to time a 226 off the flywheel? I did get the crank and cam timing correct just having trouble with the distributor timing.

I would forget about the flywheel mark till you have the initial timing set and it is running.
With the plugs out, it's easier to turn over that way, put your thumb over the front hole, number 1. Crank by hand till you feel compression on the hole and bring it to TDC. You can feel inside the hole with anything small and flexible to tell when the piston stops coming up or you can look at the set screw on the front pulley. It should be straight down, but may be straight up.
Now you are at TDC of number 1 on the compression stroke so, take the distributor cap off and see where the rotor is pointing. You can pull the distrib to line it up to any particular plug wire . The one it is pointing to needs to connect with number 1 plug. Then follow clockwise around for the other plugs using the FIRING order. If you set the distrib to open the points at the time it passes number 1 plug, it should start and run.

That is a good way to get her started and them you can set the timing with a light looking up from the bottom hole in the clutch housing there's two marks on the fly wheel, one is the fire mark and one that's top dead center mark. to set the timing with a timing light you need to run the RPM's up above 1,000 rpm's.

Final timing is to the FIRE or F-30 mark at wide open throttle !!!!
