I posted this in the construction forum originally but i figure I can get some advice here also and probably more people see it.
Im looking at welding up my cutting bits on my HD16. The center bit i can turn over but the two outside bits will then be shorter than the center. @ $500 each bit last i checked, I would like to try welding. probably looking at 1/2 inch or so. i have some cutting edge from a newer cat loader i can weld on also. what # rod should i be using. will welding on 1/2 inch of cutting bit to the bottom be a waste of time? i have put about 175 hrs on in 2 years so not using every day, mainly cleanig ponds, terraces, dirt work annd tree removal. it is a cable blade and does not go into the ground well, especially in hard dry material like everywhere this year. i have done quite a bit of welding but really only on mild steel. any advice welcome.

i would use a hard surface rod i hard surface the end bits and center on our cat d7

What I use on plow shims is a rod called hardalloy if I spelled it right. Must preheat to 400 . I use a 7018 ( 10018 ) rods for one pass and then clean it all up and moving down weld a pass of hardalloy clean it up and let it cool some and repeat. I have had good luck with it on plows and brush hog blades. Have also used stainless rods in the mix. boy it is funny with the right mix it worked very well. We have allot of stones and I try to reuse and make do with the plow parts I can. Old Oliver Radex two bottom to plow hillsides mostly for hay. Bush hog blades were a field that had cement pieces laying it. From and old silo that was drop and clean up and pieces were used to back fill an old pasture wet spot.
