My muffler wobbles back & forth. I've tightened up the set screw. I tried the next size larger muffler but it didn't fit in the hole. Is their a shim or something missing that helps hold it in place. On the plus side the new tires have been installed and we've been driving it around town. What a blast.

On mine I cemented a short piece of pipe in to the manifold.

Then I brazed another short piece of pipe to the muffler.

When installed and clamped, the muffler is more stable, plus rain water cannot run down the muffler and in to the manifold.

Set screw? Mine has a through bolt...head and flat washer inside the manifold, nut on the outside. Muffler pipe is slotted for the bolt.

The hole is threaded and the bolt is on the outside of the manifold. So should the bolt be on the inside with a washer, the muffler slot slides onto the bolt then tightened up with a nut on the outside. Their has been quite a bit of jerry-rigging on this tractor that I'm trying to get it straightened out. Bought it from the son-in-law of a 86 year old farmer who bought it used in 1946 when he got home from WWII.

I've got a couple of B manifolds where the bolt hole for the muffler is threaded. What's the deal with that. The rest are set up for the thru bolt with the nut inside. By the way, the threaded ones are not replacement but old originals. Mike

I used the threaded holes (mine had two) to my advantage... I bolted a piece of flat stock to the manifold that extends part way up the muffler. Then I used a radiator clamp to secure the muffler to the flat stock. It doesn't rattle at all now.

There is a bolt with a washer that is suppose to be in that slot on the manifold. I just put a new muffler on mine and it don't move anywhere.

Dave, you are correct. That is how mine is set up. It is an underhood muffler. I believe I have seen a muffler with another piece that continues down from the casing, ran parallel to the pipe, with a slot in it that went on the outside. You could have this set up. Maybe someone else can confirm this.

The CA, and late B's use a tall muffler with a side mounting bracket that gets bolted into the 2 holes that are threaded on the manifold. The original B manifolds only have a single non threaded hole and used a square head bolt the the nut on the outside. No washer was used as the square head bolt would lock in the round muffler hole so it can be tightened. Most replacement manifolds have the 2 treaded holes, but the top hole can still be used with a bolt for the under the hood muffler. LOL Bob

Thanks everyone for all the help with my muffler. I switched the bolt to the inside of the with a washer, screwed it in and that muffler ain't going anywhere.
