Hi guys,
I was out in my woods with my 37 WC a couple of cays ago and when I tried to back up, the drive wheels would not turn. I put it in 2nd and was able to move forward and then I could back up. Then I was able to go forward, moved about 100 feet and backed up to my 2 wheel trailer, hooked it up, moved forward another 100 feet and stopped, shut off the tractor and did some chain sawing.
When I started the WC and tried to move it, it made a couple of clunking noises and then just sat there. The belt pully was turning and when I shifted gears, I could tell that the transmission was engaging because I didn't have the clutch fully depressed. At that point I shut it down, went and got my CA and a neighbor to help me pull the WC to the barn. No noises came from the rear end as we towed the tractor.
Studying the manual, I decided to put the cover on the torque tube to make sure the pinion shaft was turning. When I started the tractor and put it in gear, the shaft was turning. I then jacked up the rear and supported well under the frame rails. When the wheels were clear, I turned each wheel by hand. If I recall correctly, when you turn one drive wheel with both of them clear the other wheel should turn in the opposite direction.
My plan is to remove the rear end because it seems that something has come loose in the differential or final drive shafts. However, at this point, I felt I should see what you fellows that have been in the final drives have to say.
I do have a couple of 39 and newer junk tractors to steal parts from but they are all the with the torque tubes that have the traction disengagement levers. The 37 is straight through shafts.
Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to give you experts all the information I could. Any advice will be VERY welcome.

Hi Dave!
First of all... is the traction disengaging mechanism on your '37 working properly? Sounds like it MIGHT be disengaging...
Second... IF you jack up the tractor, and the transmission is in gear, and the drive disengagement lever is engaged... then the tractor SHOULD hold the pinion still, AND the opposite wheel should turn the opposite direction
If they DON'T spin in the opposite direction, there's several reasons why:
1) disengagement mechanism is disengaging or broken 2) pinion or pinion gear problem allowing differential to spin free 3) spider gears in differential have problem, or broken axle shaft 4) transmission problem 5) clutch problem 6) broken final drive something or other
sorta-in-order-of-likelyhood.
I think that if you prove the disconnect to be working properly, then I'd suspect that you had a bad axle shaft, and it finally let go. Most of the problems I've seen like yours, were the result of a shaft either having the splines ripped out, or the shaft twisted off near the splines. Frequently, there'll be enough contact surface and pressure on the broken pieces so that it 'feels' like it's okay, and that the wheels turn properly, but when there's force, it slips, and winds up not doing anything.

the 37 doesn't have a disconnect so that wont be the problem
